Before topbilling in both movie and television projects, Pokwang worked in Japan as a dancer and choreographer. But after a few years, opportunities in the Land of the Rising Sun began to tail off a little, prompting her to work as a domestic helper in the Middle East. She continued in her journey by coming home to the Philippines where she started performing in multiple comedy bars.
A friend convinced her to try her luck in “Clown in a Million”, a segment on the comedy gag show “Yes Yes Yes Show” where she emerged as the grand champion among other hopeful comedians. The feat opened the doors of showbiz and Pokwang, known as Marietta Subong in real life, bravely took her step in. She was then tapped to join several tv shows like Aalog-alog, Mirabella, Toda Max, and the still running Sunday gag show, Banana Sundae.
The comedy icon brought her skills on the big screen via “D’ Lucky Ones” (2006) and “Cinco” (2010). In 2014, she starred alongside Zanjoe Marudo in the laugh-out-loud film “My Illegal Wife” where they spoofed well-loved romantic Pinoy movie scenes and acted as lovers.
But, there’s more to Pokwang than her comic abilities. The multi-talented artist can also do drama! She top billed “Edsa Woolworth” in 2014 and “A Mother’s Story” in 2011. Her performance in “Oda sa Wala” brought her a Best Actress nomination for the 3rd Malaysian Golden Global Awards. The said film also vied for the Best in Picture award.
The Make It With You star is an epitome of a superwoman as she excels in everything she does. She’s an actress, entrepreneur, loving partner to Lee O’Brian, and a mother to daughters, Mae and Malia. The Empowered Mama of showbiz proves that she can surpass all kinds of challenges as a woman while giving the Filipinos total entertainment.
