Here in the Philippines, it’s not rare to meet someone who is “laking lola” or “laking lolo”. Often times, because families are tightly knit in our culture, grandparents play a much bigger role in raising their grandchildren. Even if this isn’t the case, most people would still carry with them a memory of tasting lola’s cooking or hearing lolo’s stories.
One of our favorite It’s Showtime hosts, Mariel Rodriguez-Padilla, is no stranger to this. On Magandang Buhay, she talked about how immeasurable her love is for lola May and lolo Raffy. She is willing to do everything and anything to make the two of the happiest people in the world, and this is a promise she will keep for as long as lives. “Because ‘yon ang binigay nila sa akin growing up, and that’s what they deserve—nothing but the best,” she explained.
Lola May shared that when her husband underwent eye surgery, Mariel was the one that stayed in the hospital to look after him. This was despite the fact that the first-time mom is known to hate being apart from her daughter, Isabella, which is why even the people at hospital noticed how loving the actress was.
Lolo Raffy personally expressed his gratitude for their granddaughter saying that he feels secured. And at their age of 73 and 79, they have no worries, “’Yong wala kang inaalala dahil nandiyan si Mariel… nandiyan sila, hindi kami pinababayaan.”
Now that she has made her comeback in show business and is juggling work with being a hands-on mom, she still finds time to bond with her grandparents by occasionally sharing a meal with them. Yet, “Kung ano ‘yong ginagawa ko ngayon, kulang pa,” was all Mariel could say.
