Amidst all the excitement for Christmas, there is still the Miss Universe pageant. And if there is one thing Filipinos love as much as celebrating the Yuletide season, it is watching beauty pageants.
This year is particularly exciting because many are confident that Catriona Gray has what it takes to go all the way and claim the crown. Her outfits alone can spell out ‘on point’ because of how well they represent our culture. Included in her wardrobe is a handmade burda callado pinya silk top from Lumban, Laguna paired with a hand painted sampaguita skirt and a T’nalak belt. There is also the Filipiniana top and Ifugao skirt which she donned for the Preliminary Interview.
Turns out, however, these looks were only the tip of the ice berg. We have all seen Catriona’s national costume which her mentor Carlos Buendia Jr. and fashion designer Jearson Demavivas called “LuzViMinda.” From the parol to the body suit with authentic tattoo designs to the brass accessories and headpiece, she is representing the three major islands in every detail.
By now, any doubters left were all swept away by her ‘lava walk’. The swimwear competition of the preliminary rounds quickly became a trending topic recently after a clip of Catriona almost broke the internet. Many signature walks by different beauty queens have come and gone, but only Catriona can dare to turn in slow motion. If you ever hoping to attempt this walk, she gave tips on Magandang Buhay way back in July. “Important aspect sa mga catwalk is really posture, and then face, and then hips,” she stated.
Whatever she wears, Catriona is already making Filipinos everywhere proud with her love for our culture. All that is left now is for the Miss Universe crown to sit at the top of her head.
