Maalaala Mo Kaya host Charo Santos-Concio indeed had a short yet meaningful conversation with “Life Sketch” letter sender Arnel Amaro, who made his family proud after he achieved his longtime dream of finishing school despite going through a lot of challenges and difficulties in life – as seen in the latest episode aired last Saturday, December 12.
As Arnel aims to work as a seaman, she asked him how his adjustments in his training has been during the pandemic. He shared that he just had a two-week training and it was successful even though there were changes because of the health protocols. For instance, they were only 13 in the batch instead of the original 40 and they really observed social distancing every time they’re in the classroom. Nonetheless, he has already completed his requirements and now just needs to have more experiences before he can finally go aboard.

According to him, it has been a dream for him to work in a cruise ship ever since he was a kid. Since their livelihood was fishing, he would always see ships from afar and asked his father what’s inside those ships. An uncle of his also worked in a cruise ship, which inspired him more to dream of becoming a seafarer.
Besides, Arnel also proudly shared that he’s always been motivated to work hard to reach his ambitions because of his father who has been ever-determined in life. He saw how he would do everything in his ability just to provide for them.
And this Christmas, he won’t be able to celebrate with his family because of work. When asked if he already has his own family, he admitted that he isn’t ready to put himself in that situation because he fears that his family’s experience when he was still young will manifest also to his own.
Arnel shared a piece of advice to all the people out there, especially to the young ones who have high dreams but are in difficult situations: “Kapag may pangarap po sila, ituloy lang nila. Kahit ano ‘yung mga challenges na daanan nila, ipagpatuloy lang nila,” he said. He added that they should always set a goal for themselves and that they should not stop working hard to reach what they’re aiming for.
