Tapped to re-enact the life of Filipina world boxing champion Nesthy Petecio for Maalaala Mo Kaya, Jane De Leon took her assignment diligently. The Kapamilya actress’ passion and hard work were documented in these behind-the-scene photos mostly taken inside a boxing arena. Jane, donning a short hair and complete boxing gear, was caught reviewing the script and rehearsing her moves in-between takes. Nesthy and her teammates grabbed a photo opportunity with the cast, which included Michael Roy Jornales as Nesthy’s coach and Kiara Takahashi as Nesthy’s teammate. Some of these real-life boxing heroes also appeared as talents for the episode titled “Medal.”
Set in the province of Davao, the story established how Nesthy developed her love for boxing through the influence of her father Titing (Bembol Roco), a frustrated boxer himself who started training Nesthy at a young age. Nesthy continued pursuing her dreams despite a few setbacks including financial struggles and her father’s relatives belittling them. While almost everyone around her were either doubtful or scared, it was Titing who never stopped giving Nesthy unwavering support and encouragement.
From winning in local competitions, Nesthy chased her dreams in Manila and soon became a national athlete after a series of rigorous trainings. But, it wasn’t always victory and fame. As she slowly moved closer to the top, Nesthy encountered difficulties – longing for her family back in Davao, continuing financial ordeal, Titing’s suicidal attempt, and personal struggles as an athlete.
Through her parents’ golden lessons on defeat and success, Nesthy managed to gather her courage back and continue the fight. She became the world’s best female boxer in the featherweight division by winning the gold in the 30th Southeast Asian Games.
Fast forward to 2021, Nesthy made history as the first Filipina Olympic boxing medalist. Nesthy brought home a silver medal from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games women's featherweight final.
