In her interview with MMK host Charo Santos-Concio, Krystin admitted that it was very hard for her bring her entire family back under one roof, because of financial difficulties. When she was in college, her uncle was the only one supporting her and one of her sisters. But she was very thankful for the chance to continue her studies when she became a student-athlete. This paved the way for the eventual fulfillment of her longtime dream.
When her mother got severely ill and their father could not assume his responsibilities as head of the family, Krystin and youngest sister Sunshine stayed in their house in Manila to take care of their mom. Her father then took her other two siblings, Paul or “Toto” and Melissa, to Mindoro, where he also passed them on to another relative when he married his second wife. Meanwhile, an aunt cared for their other sibling, Mae or “Oning.” She would shoulder Oning’s studies in exchange for doing household chores.
Krystin said that their situation was extremely difficult because they grew up away from each other just to live more comfortably. Krystin shared that one of the values that their late mother told her was to learn how to forgive. Having experienced all the challenges in her life, Krystin imparted to everyone the value of being persistent and hopeful, and the value of love.
