Anniversary, let’s all look back at 5 of the most inspiring transgender stories in Maalaala Mo Kaya. 1. Maalaala Mo Kaya: Dos Por Dos (2014).
Can a gay person truly take on the responsibilities of a mother? Does gender alone define motherhood? These are some of the questions explored in this life story of transgender mom Jess, played by Arjo Atayde, who took on the role of a loving mother to six young children abandoned by their real mom (Assunta de Rossi). Atayde’s performance earned him the 2014 Best Single Performance by an Actor from the PMPC Star Awards for TV. 2. Maalaala Mo Kaya: Crown (2015).
The hashtag #MMKSameLove landed on the top spot of Twitter’s trending topics in the Philippines all throughout this episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya. This story featured Edgar Allan Guzman as Jing, a transwoman who fell in love and married Jerry (John Spainhour). In the midst of finding out Jerry’s betrayal, Jing will discover that his family’s love, which he thought he lost because of his choices, never ever wavered. 3. Maalaala Mo Kaya: Gown (2015).
Can a person ever find forgiveness for a father’s abuse and a mother who turned a blind eye to his plight? This is Rommel’s (Junjun Quintana) story, a transgender who faced so many ordeals including physical abuse and discrimination from his own family. Through sheer hard work, Rommel was able to succeed. But his greatest challenge came when he had to make a choice to forgive his parents. 4. Maalaala Mo Kaya: Puno (2016).
Joshua Garcia played the role of Ernesto who, despite being secretly gay, fell in love and got into a relationship with Jonna (Loisa Andalio). After being forced to leave his girlfriend in the province to work in the city, Ernesto inadvertently found the freedom to reveal his true identity and became Barbie. “Singsing” is a story of a transgender Sashi (Joross Gamboa) and Fats (Roxanne Guinoo) who found friendship after having to share the same man they love, Rex (Polo Ravales).
