“Mas ibang Ronnie, mas focus, mas mature."
If you are a basketball fan, then you must know the name Paul Desiderio. He only happens to be the UP Fighting Maroon Men’s Basketball former team captain. Recently, he finally went pro and was drafted into the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). This means his fans can continue to catch him on the court. Now, to celebrate his achievements so far, Maalaala Mo Kaya will take Kapamilyas beyond shooting hoops. And portraying the star player is none other than Ronnie Alonte.
“Sobrang nagulat talaga ko sa istorya niya,” Ronnie stated. He admitted that he only knew Desiderio as a basketball player which made him think that someone else could take this role, “Madami namang puwedeng basketball player din na artista.” In the end, this motivated him to do his utmost best.
Ronnie’s immediate impression of the team captain was, “Ang yabang niya sa court.” Although, once their taping started, he got to see a completely different side of the team captain. For one thing, he turned out to be a mama’s and papa’s boy who profusely used words like “po” and “opo”. “Pina-prioritize niya ‘yung pamilya niya,” Ronnie observed. It was this humble attitude that proved to be difficult for the Hashtags member. The director would have to remind Ronnie, “masyado kang maangas, hindi ganyan si Paul.”
Another challenge waiting for Ronnie was the crying scenes. Based on his experience, he never showed emotions on the court, but Desiderio does. Not only this, there were a lot of people on the set calling out his name or asking for a photo with him, “Paano ka makakapag-focus kung maraming taong nag-iingay.” He did not hesitate to ask for tips on how to better bring out his emotions.
It did help that Ronnie previously played basketball. After reading the script and sharing stories with the director Darnel Villaflor, he found his balance. “Mas pinasok ko lang ‘yung character ko na ako si Paul.”
Ronnie understands how important Desiderio is to his university and he did not want to disappoint them, “pride ng mga istudyante ‘to.” To prepare for the role, he watched basketball games and even some interviews. He also hoped to meet Desiderio in person, but he did not get the chance to visit the set.
Fellow Hashtags members will also part of the episode. Meanwhile, Loisa Andalio will be playing Desiderio’s girlfriend and former courtside reporter Agatha Uvero.
If Ronnie had to describe his performance in this episode, it would be, “mas may pinapatunayan.” He would think that it could be his last role, and this pushed him to go all out. So, don’t miss #MMKMisterAtinTo, tonight after World of Dance!
