Stars of the two-part Maalaala Mo Kaya episode “Prologue of Love” Rita Avila and Paulo Angeles shocked fans with their performance as lovers on the show. From a mother-son pairing on Precious Hearts Romances Presents Araw-Gabi, the two amazingly pull off a sweet chemistry between them.
The glowing 52-year-old actress Rita Avila is already experienced in playing a role romantically paired with a young actor. She revealed that this MMK episode is her third time to do so, but what’s surprising is that this particular one was the hardest for her.
Her two previous projects were with actors she met for the first time so her relationship with them were strictly professional. With Paulo, she explained that they already have that mother-son relationship so it was quite awkward to even think about, especially with Paulo calling her “Mommy” and her calling Paulo “Anak” out of habit.
REVIEW: Rita Avila, Paulo Angeles rouse viewers in May-December love on MMK “Entablado”
People are dying to know all the fun behind-the-scenes details of how this all came to be. If you’re one of those people, then you came to the right place. Just watch this exclusive Hotspot Live interview by DJ Jhai Ho with both Rita and Paulo!
“Who will say ‘No’ to MMK? ‘Pag nag guest ka on MMK, alam mo agad na maganda ‘yung gagawin mo eh,” said Rita as she concluded how she still wanted to accept the role offered to her. Another reason that pushed her was she wanted to show the audience an entirely different character from her vengeful role as Belen in Ang Sa Iyo Ay Akin.
Paulo also isn’t a newbie to this kind of role wherein he would have a huge age gap with his leading lady because he previously starred in the iWantTFC Ampalaya Chronicles Presents “Me and Mrs. Cruz” with Ina Raymundo. Yet like Rita, he was extremely nervous for this MMK project. Despite that, he considers this a huge blessing since he would get to work with the well-versed actress once again so he just couldn’t pass up the opportunity.
Perfecting their on-screen chemistry was, of course, a big part of their character preparation. Paulo admits that it took a lot of effort for him to switch up his lenses and not see Rita as a mother figure, especially during their touchy scenes. His nervousness would show with shaky hands, but eventually he got the hang of it and was able to bring that kilig factor we saw when the first part of the episode aired.
Rita adds to the conversation, “Siyempre as actors, gan’on talaga. Kahit may ilang factor, kailangan ma-overcome mo eh para makapasok ka doon sa character.”
As the two artists are now well known for such daring roles, they also talked about comments from their family and friends. Paulo claimed that they are honestly happy for the opportunity and growth it opens up for him. He even added how they reminded him that because his roles are more mature, he may need to keep his body fit and physically-maintained.
Before ending the exclusive interview, DJ Jhai asked the stars on their take about love and how they would fight for it the same way their MMK characters do so. Paulo knows in himself that he is a loyal man and when he loves, he does it seriously. He would fight for it as long as his partner does as well. After all, that is what love is for him — choosing the person you love whatever comes your way.
Rita believes true love is rare, phrasing it as “to find love is to find treasure” where you will pass many trials just to prove the love between two people. She recalls her own trials of love as she is married to Direk FM Reyes, who is eight years younger than her. Given that they are both showbiz personalities, their relationship buzzed some talks before but they both managed to box those away because she knows their love is all that matters. In her words, “parang two against the world”.
