As children, we are always reminded to be obedient to our parents because more than anyone else, they are the ones who know what is the best for us. However, the latest episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya titled “Laptop” proves that sometimes, their actions and thoughts can also endanger us.
Just like what happened to former Pinoy Junior Master Chef contestant Caitlin Taluban (Michelle Vito) whose identity was stolen online when her mother Vivian (Rufa Mae Quinto) befriended and fully trusted one of her fans named “Charles” (Kokoy de Santos) even though they just met on social media.
Ever since she was a child, Caitlin always followed her mom. Due to her meekness, Caitlin was forced to join various competitions to boost her confidence – from beauty pageants to the aforementioned televised cooking contest – in which her mom supported her all the way. Vivian even put up a Facebook page for her in order to gain followers and communicate with her fans, and continually updated it.
Unfortunately, Vivian’s enthusiasm to keep her daughter’s popularity and immense thrill in using social media put Caitlin to a difficult situation. After acquiring her full trust, “Charles” began asking peculiar things from them, such as a fan sign and a video greeting for his friend Isaiah (Mark Neumann), who is said to be a fan of the gorgeous lady as well.
Unbeknownst to them, Charles used the information and stuff he collected to pretend as Caitlin. By that time, the amicable mother was already constantly communicating with Isaiah, who expressed his deep admiration for Caitlin. Despite her daughter’s aversion, she still agreed to meet with him personally in Pangasinan. It was succeeded by an invitation to a Valentine’s Date, in which the appalling secret of the poser was gradually exposed.
As Vivian confronted Charles via phone, it was revealed that under the handle “Von Reyes,” he used photos of her daughter in luring other guys and sending them sensitive images. This sparked an intense fight between her and her daughter and instilled to her a life lesson she would never forget.
In one of her Instagram posts, the 19-year-old wrote, “The deception [was] discovered last Feb 2018.
Charles continues to apologize for what he did. Siguro someday we will be able to completely forgive and move on. Salamat din sa mga nanood at nag-message. God bless you all.”
Now, their family is living a peaceful and blissful life. These snaps suggest that she has great penchant in photography, travel, and food and loves her family and friends so much. She graduated in college last April, alongside her equally beautiful sister Angelica.
The episode stands as a reminder for all of us to utilize social media in a productive and beneficial way and to handle it responsibly and with utmost caution. It teaches us the lesson not to bestow our trust to someone easily, especially those we haven’t met nor known yet personally.
Plus, it also tells parents or the elderlies to lend an ear to their children or the young ones and do not disregard their opinions because admit it or not, they can learn a lesson or two from them, especially in the current era.
