REVIEW: Chords of forgiveness and love for family enliven MMK “Gitara”

How does a family share sweet music together, despite all challenges and even sordid betrayal among those who were supposedly its guiding light?

Forgiveness and love should take its course and live through the worst.

Quite appropriately, this family is indeed musically inclined as they faced something that would have eventually threatened its core.

A frustrated singer-songwriter, Jack (Jay Manalo) was at the bitter end of this torment after discovering that his wife Vivien (Cherry Pie Picache) engaged in an illicit, extra-marital romance while he worked in Taiwan. They almost strayed away from each other, but not after his two sons Marko and Niko pleaded that they work things out.

Harmonious relationship

Jack then forgave Vivien, and they went on to have a harmonious relationship together with their growing children. As they reached their late teens, Marko (Sam Concepcion) and Niko (Vin Abrenica) have shown how much they inherited their father’s passion for music as they formed a band named The Band Dogz, with the help of their all too supportive parents, especially Jack who now had the chance to relive his passion for music.

Jack had become their talent manager throughout Dagupan, booking them in various gigs such as weddings, birthdays, and mall shows. And as their following swelled, he thought of spicing up their appearances with back-up dancers as the band performed. They enlisted a dancing group they named Rabiez, in which one member, Lyca (Karen Reyes), had gone into a short-lived romance with Marko, who broke up with her after just a few weeks and reunited with his ex-girlfriend.

promised to stick to one after reconciling with his old flame. Then, after rehearsals for a gig, Jack got the chance to speak with Lyca and apologized for his son’s actions. She appreciated the gesture and became enamored with Jack. Jack, too, saw the 18-year-old Lyca in a new, amorous light and the attraction between the two blossomed.

Extra-marital affair

And, after a “barbecue” date on the breakwater, they became an item, with Jack himself going against his so-called ideals of loyalty to one woman. He then engaged in an extra-marital affair with Lyca that led to serious and sensual trysts.

Their intimacy was very much the talk of the town, with even Marko and Niko noticing their closeness during rehearsals and actual shows. Vivien was also suspicious about their exchanges and body language until one day, she received an anonymous text message informing her that she take a close watch on Jack, who was having an affair with the dancer Lyca.

Jack reminded his wife about her betrayal years back. Realizing that Jack hasn’t forgiven her and that his actions would make it even between them, Vivien then pleaded to Jack that he cut ties with his mistress, who is young enough to be his daughter.

Jack ignored her plea and continued with the affair as Vivien decided to leave Jack and return to her family’s home in Cavite. Marko and Niko chanced upon their mother as she was leaving their house and asked why. It became quite apparent that it was Jack’s affair with Lyca that made Vivien decide to leave. Marko and Niko were crushed and took their father to task for the impropriety.

What matters most

Both deplored how their father would even think of cheating on their mother with someone almost half his age and had been Marko’s former fling. Jack then declared to both that their mom did the same thing to him years ago when they were small kids, a fact which they downplayed. It did not matter if their mom was unfaithful years back, what mattered was that she was a supporting and loyal wife since that malfeasance and made up for all the wrongs she did. It can’t be a way to get back at her. This was when Jack came to his senses and decided not to let his May-December affair destroy his family. He then broke off with Lyca and sought to bring Vivien back to his life. With his sons back in his arms, Jack thought of the best way to win back Vivien: through a song. Accompanied by Marko and Niko, Jack went to Vivien and expressed his deepest apologies and told her how much he loves her and that he wanted her back. Jack then sang a special song to a touched and teary eyed Vivien as their ecstatic sons so glad to see their family complete again.

Life’s crescendos

Chavez Pobocan, the episode gives an emphatic argument as to why any such misdeed, though loathsome, still remains a corrective matter to settle and resolve. Forgiveness and love prevail in the end.

Jay Manalo was believable and superb in portraying Jack in his veiled and contradicting demeanor until he reaches contriteness and redemption. Cherry Pie Picache was in her usual enthralling thespic self as Vivien in captivating viewers with her natural and relatable portrayal. Sam Concepcion impressed us with his vibrant performance, and Vin Abrenica indeed charmed us with his lead actor potential.
