PAANDAR 2017: First-Timers in ‘Maalaala Mo Kaya’

 

2017 is another year of many firsts. Several Kapamilya celebrities starred for the very first time in “Maalaala Mo Kaya,” which is now on its twenty-sixth year on air. Before the year ends, as part of Paandar 2017, let us list down the first-timers in the longest-running drama anthology in Asia as we take a look again at their memorable performances.

 

Bela Padilla

 

Bela appeared in the July 15 episode entitled “Ice Candy.” She portrayed the role of Melanie, a hunchbacked woman who always followed a straight path in life and never bent her principles despite her dark past. Unfortunately, as she was about to start a new life in the city, she was raped by one of her co-workers.

The episode also starred Niña Dolino, Viveika Ravanes, Mutya Orquia, Miel Espinoza, and Mickey Ferriols. It was directed by Jerome Pobocan and written by Akeem Del Rosario.

 

Elmo Magalona

 

Elmo starred in the October 21 episode entitled “Bahay.” He played the role of Baning, the loving brother of Nonoy (Yves Flores) who served as his brother’s legs so he could go to different places. However, as they were about to enter college, they were confronted with the dilemma because they wanted to take different courses.

The episode also featured Miles Ocampo, Arlene Muhlach, Pinky Marquez, Crispin Pineda, and Smokey Manaloto. It was directed by Dado Lumibao and written by Benson Logronio.

 

Aljur Abrenica

 

Aljur appeared in the September 16 episode entitled “Tungkod.” He portrayed the role of Anton, the son of Pacita (Chanda Romero) who disowned her mother and abandoned her when she seemed to have lost everything.

The episode also starred Jennifer Mendoza, Maricel Morales, Karel Marquez, JM Ibañez, and Izzy Canillo. It was directed by Nuel Naval and written by Akeem del Rosario.

 

McCoy De Leon

 

McCoy starred in the April 1 episode entitled “Saklay.” He played the role of Mon, an only child who literally had it all because everything he wanted was given to him by his parents. Unfortunately, his luxurious life was gone in a snap when their family’s business failed and both of his parents died.

The episode also featured Tetchie Agbayani, Louella de Cordova, Patrick Sugui, Dang Cruz, Lei Navarro, and Christopher de Leon. It was directed by Elfren Vibar and written by Benson Logronio.

 

Elisse Joson

 

Elisse appeared in the June 10 episode entitled “Laptop.” She portrayed the role of Rose, an overweight girl who hid behind a fake account on Facebook and used her cousin’s picture as her profile photo. However, things became complicated when she met and fell in love with a guy named Josh (McCoy De Leon).

The episode also starred Ara Mina, Chienna Filomeno, Axel Torres, Igiboy Flores, Patrick Sugui, Vin Abrenica, Ysabel Ortega, and Alvin Anson. It was directed by Raz Dela Torre and written by Jaymar Castro.

 

Louise delos Reyes

 

Louise starred in the November 25 episode entitled “Siopao.” She played the role of Ani, the mistress of Dodong (Allen Dizon) who lived under one roof with his legal wife, Cenia (Vina Morales). Before he died, Dodong asked his wife to take care of Ani because she was carrying his illegitimate child.

The episode also featured Andrea Brillantes, Hyubs Azarcon, and Tony Manalo. It was directed by Topel Lee and written by Benson Logronio.

 

Christian Bables

 

Christian appeared in the August 12 episode entitled “Limelight.” He portrayed the role of Ben, the son of actress Helen Vela (Gloria Diaz) and the sibling of Princess Punzalan (Ritz Azul) who worked in a gay bar as a macho dancer. Growing up in the public eye, he received many hurtful comments from people concerning his physical features which made him very insecure, even though his family always supported him.

The episode also starred Ingrid dela Paz, Micah Javier, Alex Castro, Angelo Ilagan, and Toby Alejar. It was directed by Raz dela Torre and written by Shugo Praico.

 

Maymay Entrata

 

Maymay starred in the March 25 episode entitled “Bahay.” She played as herself in this reenactment of her own life story. She shared her struggles in life before becoming the Big Winner of “Pinoy Big Brother: Lucky 7.” Behind her positive disposition in life, she didn’t grow up in an ideal family set-up because she was raised by her grandparents. Her world crumbled when her beloved grandfather got hospitalized for his heart condition, which depleted the family’s finances.

The episode also featured Vina Morales, Ces Quesada, Paul Salas, Kira Balinger, Gerald Madrid, Marc Acueza, and Dante Rivero. It was directed by Raz dela Torre and written by Arah Badayos and Joan Habana.

 

Jake Zyrus

 

Jake appeared in the August 26 episode entitled “Jumper.” He portrayed himself in this reenactment of his own life story. He relived the struggles he went through before coming out as a transman. He wanted nothing but for people, especially his mother, to accept him for who he is. As he grew up, he also grew certain about his gender, yet he still chose to act and dress as a woman in public so as not to jeopardize his career.

The episode also featured Sharlene San Pedro, Mutya Orquia, Paul Salas, and Troy Montero. It was directed by Nuel Naval and written by Benson Logronio.
