People around the globe have been raving about how heart-wrenchingly beautiful the movie The Fault in our Stars is. Filipinos are no different with a recent Time article pointing out that the country tops the list of nations obsessed with the tearjerker.

The Fault in our Stars tells the story of a teenage girl with cancer named Hazel Grace Lancaster who falls in love with Augustus “Gus” Waters, the teenage boy whom she meets in the Cancer Support Group. The first time Gus and Hazel meet

Gus was captivated by Hazel’s beauty the moment he laid his eyes on her. Gus could not take his eyes off Hazel the first time they met in the Cancer Support Group and admitted that he had an instant crush on her saying, “I enjoy looking at beautiful people, and I decided a while ago not to deny myself the simpler pleasures of existence.”

When Gus and Hazel visit Peter Van Houten

Gus and Hazel flew to Amsterdam so that Hazel could meet Peter Van Houten, the author of her favorite book An Imperial Affliction. Van Houten turned to be a total airhead and their encounter turned into an intense fight. Their meeting with the author turned totally sour so that Hazel promised herself she would never see Van Houten again.

It was one fine night in Amsterdam and Gus and Hazel had a lovely dinner at a restaurant called Oranjee. Gus professed his love for Hazel during that night. “I'm in love with you, and I'm not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I'm in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we'll ever have, and I am in love with you,” Gus said to Hazel.

Hazel’s Eulogy for Gus

Gus, whose cancer was in remission, suffered a major setback as the disease returns and spreads throughout his body. He wanted to “witness his own funeral” so he asked Hazel to read her Eulogy for him days before he died. “Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I’m grateful,” Hazel said to Gus.

Hazel had a total breakdown when she learned that Gus passed away. On the day of Gus’s funeral, Hazel admitted that it was the most painful day of her life. “When you go into the ER, one of the first things they ask you to do is to rate your pain on a scale of one to ten… And here it was the great and terrible ten.” Hazel witnessing the love of her life being laid to rest has definitely pulled some major heartstrings.
