Wanted: Dorina in ‘Bituing Walang Ningning: The Musical’
That is, essay Sharon Cuneta’s iconic role of Dorina in the upcoming musical theater adaptation of the 80s Pinoy film classic, “Bituing Walang Ningning”?
Its original film producer Viva Entertainment has partnered with Resorts World Manila in bringing the popular movie tale onto the musical theater stage after a successful TV adaptation in 2006 on ABS-CBN with Sarah Geronimo portraying Dorina.
The enticing fact about this latest production is that no one has landed, or even eyed to bag the plum role of Dorina yet and it’s up for grabs via an open audition come February 28 to March 1 at Resorts World Manila’s Atrium.
But what’s sure for now is that veteran musical theater actress Cris Villonco will play Lavinia, Cherie Gil’s unforgettable character, and Mark Bautista, who has since emerged as an international theater artist when he headlined “Here Lies Love” in London, portraying Nico Escobar, the role played by Christopher de Leon in the film.
It will be interesting to see how those confrontational scenes would be rendered onstage, especially the one when supposed “trying hard copycats” get the douse of water on the face from a wine glass kind of treatment. A definite must-see, especially with acclaimed director Freddie Santos and songwriter Willy Cruz at the helm.
This will just be the start of a series of musical stage adaptations of popular films under the Viva-Resorts World partnership. Currently being planned are theater versions of “Annie Batungbakal” and “Bagets.”
