From captivating us with the unlikely love story of a caterpillar and cockroach in their Magpasikat performances that gave them their championship in 2018, the tandem of Karylle and Jhong Hilario delighted us with their Proudly Pinoy-themed musical number in this year’s 11th anniversary fete of It’s Showtime!
WATCH: It’s Showtime: Team Karylle-Jhong-Ion showcases colorful culture, resiliency of Pinoys in Magpasikat 2020 number
With child wonders Aaron “Yorme” Sunga and Scarlet Snow Belo as the adorable introducers, their team indeed gave a glimpse of our colorful culture as they depicted the lives of ordinary Filipinos – Jhong as cheerful jeepney driver, Karylle as a talented balut vendor, and their third member Ion “Kuya Escort” Perez as a romantic ice cream vendor – while grooving to some OPM classics.
Dancing to Juan de la Cruz’s “Beep, Beep”, Jhong once again proved why he’s hailed the “Sample King” as he enthralled us with his signature dance moves and thrilling tumbling from atop a jeepney. Meanwhile, from being ridiculed because of his snazzy steps, Ion impressed us with his cover of “Mamang Sorbetero”; while Karylle astounded us with her vocal prowess in singing and grooving to “Balut, Penoy, Balut”. They also exhibited their chops in folk dances cariñosa, maglalatik, and tinikling.
The festive mood then shifted to gloom as montage of pandemic-related news flashed on the screens. We saw each of them having their respective soliloquies as the characters they portrayed lamented on how the current situation has terribly affected them.
At the same time, they also exhibited the undying resilience of us Filipinos, who are not only able to find something to be still happy about during these trying times, but are able to find other ways to provide for their families.
Kaladkaren Davila also made a special appearance as the host of the fictional program “May Paraan”, presenting how the three characters stood up from being toppled down by the pandemic and used their skills and resources in order to move forward in life.
Ion became an online ice cream vendor who uses his dancing talent in order to attract more customers, Karylle turned out to be a YouTuber after the videos of her baluts hatching into itiks became viral hits, while Jhong used his talent in cooking and sold different viands.
Just like in their previous team-ups, Karylle and Jhong once again performed an original composition of the former’s husband and Spongecola frontman Yael Yuzon titled “Aahon”, as their way of further inspiring the madlang people during the crises we’re going through.
The one and only Divine Diva and Karylle’s mom Zsa Zsa Padilla also stunned us with her surprise appearance at the end of the number as the teacher of Scarlet and Yorme.
Team Karylle-Jhong-Ion then introduced the three people that inspired their production number and bestowed them their gifts, which would be a great help in their daily living. A lucky home viewer also received Php11,000 ayuda from It’s Showtime!
