Ever since its inception in 2009, It’s Showtime has definitely took television by storm and has forever changed our noontime viewing habit. From being a mere talent competition slated in the morning, we witnessed how it continues to prosper as the most popular and well-loved noontime daily variety show at present, not to mention being crowned as ABS-CBN’s longest-running program of the said genre and timeslot.
Through the years, we’ve been accompanied by its gregarious hosts and other Kapamilya celebrities who have been a part of its incessantly growing ensemble, who never failed to bring good vibes and laughter to the madlang people through their hilarious quirks and banters. At the same time, we also found ourselves entertained with every segment that they introduce, in which not only prizes are given away, but the chance to seize the spotlight for those person/s or groups after their remarkable stints on the show.
As we celebrate It’s Showtime “Sampu-Sample” 10th anniversary fete, here are some of the personalities who skyrocketed to immense popularity because of their respective exposures on the show.
Jackque “Ate Girl” Gonzaga
From being an It’s Showtime dancer, little did Jackque Gyl Gonzaga, or more popularly known as “Ate Girl Jackque”, that from providing back-up movements to the hosts and guests, she would soon be given a spot alongside them. It all started in December 2017 when Vice noticed her in the Miss Q & A segment, which led to their kilig and hugot-filled exchanges that truly got the madlang people hooked and thrilled everytime they appear on-screen together and the formation of the “ViceJack” tandem.
As her popularity continues to take-off, Vice has been tagging her along in his out-of-town and international shows since his followers are looking forward to see her with him, too! Besides, she’s also able to prove that she’s not only a great dancer, but a promising actress as well through her stint in the Bidaman segment.
Ion “Kuya Escort” Perez
It was on September 19, 2018 when he had his debut on the program as the supposed substitute to another Kuya Escort, but Benigno Perez, or simply Ion, was able to immediately capture us with his unmistakable charm, funny signature dance moves, and instant chemistry with the Unkabogable Star.
Within more than a year of being our favorite Kuya Escort, he’s able to gain a lot of followers and gigs outside the show.
Stephanie “Stephen” Robles
At first sight, we couldn’t help but be confused with this gorgeous dancer’s gender, which was worsened by Vice’s “revelation” that she’s a transgender. This actually caused a stir among viewers, including host Jhong Hilario, but was dispelled overtime as we’re able to ascertain via her Instagram account that Stephanie Robles, or fondly called Stephen, is biologically female. But she’s actually more than just a pretty face as the girl could sing and act as well!
She impressed us with her acting chops through her performances in the Bidaman segment, and recently joined the Tawag ng Tanghalan Celebrity Champions as one of the contenders on its first day.
Issa “Sanrio” Meaker
Baby-faced, it’s indeed impossible not to look twice with this It’s Showtime dancer, who came into the picture after bravely daring the Unkabogable Star to a “palakihan ng ribbon” in one episode, thus the nickname “Sanrio”. From being a fetcher of Tawag ng Tanghalan contestants and a back-up dancer, Issa Meaker was given the opportunity to do opening numbers, with her, Jackie, and Stephen at the center.
Mainstay Ryan Bang’s unforeseen threat came one day through his notable arrival on the noontime show as one of the Kalawhoks in the “KapareWho” segment tagged as Song-yupsal. Impressed by his fluency in Tagalog, wit, and singing prowess, it wasn’t hard for pure-blooded Korean Jinho Bae to win our hearts and getting hired to be one of the segment’s recurring guest hosts since. He’s also part of Tawag ng Tanghalan Celebrity Champions as one of its contestants.
From delighting the madlang people with their exceptional singing talents as the contestants-turned-finalists of the first season of Tawag ng Tanghalan Kids in 2017, we’ve seen how Keifer Sanchez, Mackie Empuerto, and Francis Concepcion continue to soar and conquer local and international stages as the renowned TNT Boys. Keifer was a runner-up, Mackie placed third, and Francis was fifth on the said competition.
The first-ever grand champion of the original Showtime, this all-male dance crew from General Santos City, South Cotabato has been a fixture on the program as one the groups providing back-up choreographies.
Of course, who would forget the grand winner of Tawag ng Tanghalan Season 2, who amazed us with her powerful, unique vocals? She might have been in the entertainment scene for so many years as a child actress, but Janine definitely gained more popularity after joining the contest. At present, she’s one of the hosts of It’s Showtime Online and one of the regular cast of Sine Mo ‘To Online. She’s also the voice behind the official sound track of Kadenang Ginto, “Nasa Puso”.
With her irresistible cuteness and fascinating British accent, it’s truly impossible not to adore this Filipino-British charmer who emerged as the grand winner of It’s Showtime’s “Mini Me Season 2” due to her on-point impersonation of Hollywood superstar Selena Gomez.
She became a part of the show by being the main host the “Xia and Kuys” segment that she co-hosted with Vhong Navarro and Billy Crawford and appearing in a Sine Mo ‘To narrative. Xia later on appeared in several TV programs and movies, such as “My Perfect You” (2018), “Alone/Together” (2019), “Familia Blondina” (2019), FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano (2015-2016), Langit Lupa (2016), Your Face Sounds Familiar Kids (2017), The Kids’ Choice (2018), and Maalaala Mo Kaya.
At present, she’s one of the hosts of Yey! Channel’s kiddie program Team Yey!
Before winning our hearts as Onyok, the adorable young sidekick of Cardo Dalisay (Coco Martin) in FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, Xymon Ezekiel Pineda first got us smitten with him as the three-year-old impersonator of Pinoy rock icon Bamboo in the inaugural season of “Mini Me”, in which he placed as the second runner-up.
After his unforeseen departure from the primetime series, he afterwards appeared in Kapamilya programs, such as Wansapanataym: Amazing Ving (2017), Your Face Sounds Familiar: Kids Season 2 (2018), The Kids’ Choice (2018), and Maalaala Mo Kaya. He also scored supporting roles in Star Cinema movies “The Super Parental Guardians” (2016), “Loving in Tandem” (2017), and “Ang Panday” (2017).
Only three years old then, Enzo enthralled the madlang people as the cute self-confessed Mini Me of King Of Hearts Daniel Padilla on the second season of the aforementioned contest. Despite being just a runner-up to Xia, this little heartthrob was still a winner as he became a part of the It’s Showtime family and used to be known for his “blad” call sign to host Vhong Navarro.
He later on appeared in a few episodes of Maalaala Mo Kaya and cast as a supporting role in the 2017 ‘kid serye’ My Dear Heart. He currently stars as Buboy in the newest Kapamilya teleserye Starla, alongside Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo.
She was five years old then when she first stepped on the It’s Showtime stage as member of one of the families who competed in the Bida Kapamilya segment in 2012. Due to her energetic and bubbly personality, not to mention unmistakable cuteness, Baby Rhed was able to captivate the audiences and management, thus, declaring her as an official member of the It’s Showtime family.
Her tenure on the show might be short-lived, but a lot of acting projects came into her, turning her into a phenomenal child actress and a notable young ‘bida-kontrabida’. However, the personal challenges she had faced in the recent years caused her star to cease shining and be kicked out of the limelight. Thankfully, due to her exclusive interview with Rated K in September 2018, she was able to return to the local entertainment scene via FPJ’s ang Probinsyano after Coco Martin bestowed her a supporting role.
Angelica Jane “Pastillas Girl” Yap
Our noontime viewing had been filled with kilig in the fourth quarter of 2015 with the arrival of online sensation Angelica Jane Yap, or more popularly known as “Pastillas Girl” on the program. She debuted via the “adVICE GANDA” segment, wherein she sought the advice of the Unkabogable Star, a.k.a. Madam Bertud regarding her breakup with her then ex-boyfriend.
That appearance ensued to the launch of an on-air dating segment called “Nasaan Ka, Mr. Pastillas?” in pursuit of helping Angelica move on and find someone who could be her possible new love interest. It ran for a month and concluded in a grand finale held during It’s Showtime’s show in Cebu, in which she chose her suitor Richard Parojinog to be her Mr. Pastillas.
She has kept her celebrity status at present and runs a self-titled vlog as well.
Chard “Mr. Pastillas” Ocampo
It was not only Ms. Pastillas whose heart he was able to win, but ours too! Romance might have failed to flourish between the two of them after their stint on the show, but Chard has been really blessed when it comes to his showbiz career. Possessing a voice that could make everyone kilig, Richard Parojinog, or currently known by his screen name Chard Ocampo, was offered by the It’s Showtime management assistance to further develop and pursue his dream to become a singer.
He’s currently signed as a recording artist of Star Music’s Star Pop and one of the contenders in Tawag ng Tanghalan Celebrity Champions.
Funny One finalists
In 2015 and 2017, It’s Showtime paved the way for aspiring comedians to break into the local entertainment scene through the inception of the comedy competition Funny One. But among the groups and individuals who showcased their innate comical chops, Ryan Rems Sarita and Donna Cariaga were the ones who dominated on its first and second season, respectively. Other notable acts featured on the segment were Crazy Duo, Nonong Ballinan, No Direction, and Gibis Alejandrino. Most of them appeared in programs of ABS-CBN and CineMo.
Also on those same years, It’s Showtime introduced their very own all-male song and dance group dubbed Hashtags. The first batch was introduced in November 2015, which was comprised by Pinoy Big Brother alumni Zeus Collins, Jimboy Martin, Tom Doromal, and Jameson Blake; Star Magic artists McCoy de Leon, Paulo Angeles, Jon Lucas, Ryle Santiago, and Ronnie Alonte; and Gandang Lalake segment finalists Nikko Natividad and Luke Conde.
Two years after, eight more dashing dudes were added to the group, namely Vitto Marquez, Wilbert Ross, Rayt Carreon, Kid Yambao, Maru Delgado, CK Kieron, Bugoy Carino, and Franco Hernandez.
While there are some who already departed from the group, most of them remained and became hosts of It’s Showtime Online and partake in some segments of the program, while juggling their other showbiz shindigs.
The distaff or female counterpart of Hashtags, GirlTrends was introduced on February 13, 2016 and was composed of former PBB housemates and young actresses. A lot of changes happened, especially in its lineup, but it has remained strong amidst the controversies they’ve underwent through the years.
It was called as “GT” on May 9, 2019, and is currently comprised of Chienna Filomeno, Krissha Viaje, Joana Hipolito, Sammie Rimando, Mikee Agustin, Mica Javier, and Jessica Marasigan. They join the Hashtags in hosting It’s Showtime Online while working on their other personal endeavors.
Former tennis player and The Blood Sisters actress Maika Rivera, as well as Halik star and newest Darna actress Jane De Leon, are among the notable ex-members of GirlTrends.
