JM de Guzman’s versatility, brilliance as an actor as seen in his teleserye portrayals

In his decade-long career in the local entertainment scene, JM de Guzman has never failed to astonish us with his compelling portrayal of every character that he gives life to. And this 2021, he’s bound to stun us anew with his highly anticipated stint in the upcoming primetime series Init Sa Magdamag.

And while we are looking forward to meet his latest character Peterson Alvarez, let’s take a look back on his remarkable television acting journey through the years in this episode of Kapamilya Spotlight!

He may have come into popularity as an indie film actor, but it was revealed in his exclusive interview with Star Magic in October 2018 that his career originally took off by doing commercials when he was only six years old. At 13, he was among the cast of the youth-oriented show Ang TV 2, alongside Empress Schuck, Shaina Magdayao, Arjo Atayde, and Denise Laurel. He also auditioned to be a part of the Star Circle Batch 9, which included Janus Del Prado, Heart Evangelista, Coco Martin, Alwyn Uytingco, and Rafael Rosell, but he wasn’t launched because the management deemed of him as too young and not mature enough during that time.

Many years later, he successfully broke into showbiz by playing small roles in the four books of Precious Hearts Romances Presents in 2010, namely, “The Substitute Bride,” “Midnight Phantom,” “Kristine,” and “Alyna.”

Seeing his great potential as an actor, the year 2011 had been a great year and a year of firsts for JM due to the strings of opportunities bestowed to him.

He had his first Maalaala Mo Kaya stint through the “Pasaporte” episode, wherein he reenacted the harrowing story of “Jay” an overseas Filipino worker who almost became a drug courier of the West African Drug Syndicate in his hopes of scoring a great opportunity abroad. It was then succeeded by his portrayal of Pilipinas Got Talent Season 2 grand winner Marcelito Pomoy when his inspiring journey was featured in the longest-running drama anthology.

On that same year, he landed his first-ever starring role via the remake of the classic 90’s soap opera Mula Sa Puso. He played Gabriel Amarillo, which was originally by the late actor Rico Yan, and headlined the teleserye alongside Lauren Young and Enrique Gil.

Before 2011 ended, the sought-after Kapamilya heartthrob amazed us in his more mature, not to mention first titular, role in the iconic and well-loved afternoon drama Angelito: Ang Batang Ama. Due to the positive reception of the viewers, a sequel was released a year after titled Angelito: Ang Bagong Yugto. He also touched our hearts as the lovelorn Muslim man Acmad who fell hardly in love to a Christian woman named Flor (Marlann Flores) in the “Kurtina” episode of MMK.

After his one-year hiatus, he marked his much-awaited return in 2014 by appearing on his first-ever Ipaglaban Mo episode tagged “Ibigay Ang Aming Karapatan” and on the primetime series Hawak Kamay  as the half-brother of Piolo Pascual’s character. He made us kilig, too, with his stint in the “Sim Card” episode of MMK as the chick and gay magnet Alex.

In 2015, he once again scored an Ipagalaban Mo gig through its Valentine episode “Totoong Mahal Kita” opposite Meg Imperial, as well as in MMK via the “Bota” episode. He then starred in the afternoon series All Of Me as Edong, the teenage version of Albert Martinez’s character Dr. Manuel Figueras and became the love interest of the latter’s wife Lena (Yen Santos).

Due to his personal struggles, JM had been out of the limelight for some years. Thus, his comeback in 2018 was indeed highly anticipated by avid Kapamilya viewers, especially by his fans, which was marked by his astounding portrayal of the dashing and mysterious Adrian Oldivar in Araw Gabi, which also served as the official return of the Precious Hearts Romances Presents series on television after five years.

The 30-year-old actor continues to amaze us with his exceptional acting chops in 2019 through his performances in MMK as Pinoy professional mixed martial arts fighter Ramon “The Bicolano” Gonzales in its “Black Belt” episode and in Ipaglaban Mo as an identity thief in the “Impostor” episode alongside Rafael Rosell.

And now, from endearing us as the hardworking and loving Kuya Chico of the Mabunga Family in Pamilya Ko, he has astonishingly stripped off his wholesome teleserye image in the much anticipated, controversial primetime series Init Sa Magdamag as he portrays the intense, tenacious, and egocentric aspiring politician Peterson Alvarez, who would do anything to keep the woman he loves.

Catch JM on Init Sa Magdamag, weeknights after Huwag Kang Mangamba on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, A2Z Channel 11, and iWantTFC.
