Asia' Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid is undoubtedly one of the most prolific artists in the OPM scene, as attested by chart-topping singles, best-selling albums, sold-out concerts, and even well-loved television shows and movies under her belt.
Those who have followed her journey would know that just like many, she also started as a kontesera, as what she revealed in her first-ever Magandang Buhay guesting in 2018. In fact, her career started after winning "Ang Bagong Kampeon" in 1984 when she was only 14 years old.
Her accomplishments and humble beginnings have surely not only made people idolize her, but also inspired them to pursue their dreams of breaking into showbiz – perhaps like the contestants of Idol Philippines Season 1.
As we all know, the singing contest is among Regine's big projects ever since she went back to ABS-CBN in 2018. With its return this year for a new season beginning this weekend, June 25 and 26, she reprises her role as a judge, alongside Moira Dela Torre, Chito Miranda, and Gary Valenciano.
But before we get amused and stirred by the way they'll give their verdicts to the "Idol Hopefuls", let's look back on the breathtaking and remarkable performances of Asia's Songbird in her early years as a Kapamilya again in this Spotlight feature!
It was on October 17, 2018 when she signed an exclusive network contract with ABS-CBN, over thirty years after her first appearance in the 80s teen variety show "Teen Pan Alley" when she was 16 years old.
A few days after her grand homecoming, she had her guesting in the now-defunct comedy talk show Gandang Gabi Vice, wherein she performed one of her all-time favorite hits “Araw Gabi”. Of course, everyone truly enjoyed it, especially host Vice Ganda who’s a self-confessed big fan of hers.
The following month, It’s Showtime prepared a delightful production number for her. GirlTrends and Hashtags commenced it by dancing to “Urong Sulong”, which was followed by Tawag ng Tanghalan alumnae delivering their version of “Dadalhin” and Jhong Hilario and Karylle performing a duet of “Hanggang Ngayon”.
Regine then brought everyone to their feet when she emerged onstage and belted out “Shine” and her rendition of UDD’s “Tadhana”, which turned her emotional. Everyone then joined her in singing “Pangako”, with the Asia’s Songbird changing the last lyrics to “pangakong magmula ngayo’y Kapamilya na ako panghabambuhay” that truly made the audience erupt to loud cheers. Ogie Alcasid was indeed a proud husband as he showed his moral support.
She also took the opportunity to yell the noontime program's signature greeting “what’s up, madlang people!” that, according to her, she’d been yearning to do. Besides, she took Jhong’s request to say “It’s Showtime” to the highest pitch she could.
It was also in November 2018 when she had her ASAP Natin ‘To debut, taking our breaths away with her powerful performance of “Narito Ako”.
“Nagpapasalamat po ako sa napakainit n’yong pagtanggap sa akin dito sa ASAP Natin ‘To. Masaya ako dahil, finally, nakabalik ako rito at makakakanta muli ako sa musical variety show. At gusto ko rin po talagang makikanta at maki-collaborate sa mga naggagalingang singers dito because ASAP is the home of the champions,” she said afterwards..
The 52-year-old multi-hyphenate was then joined by Kapamilya champions composed of Jed Madela, Erik Santos, Jason Dy, Mitoy Yonting, Marcelito Pomoy, Noven Belleza, KZ Tandingan, Janine Berdin, Elha Nympha, Frenchie Dy, Jona, Angeline Quinto in singing two of the songs close to her heart – “In Your Eyes” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” – while her Mommy V was in the audience.
Being in the industry for more than three decades, she has surely made a lot of friends in her fellow celebrities. And one of them is Soul Diva Jaya, who celebrated her 30th anniversary in showbiz in 2019.
As Magandang Buhay organized a special tribute for her in March of that year, she made sure to join her in celebrating this milestone. They didn’t only reminisce about their lasting, genuine friendship, but also astounded us with their duet of “Habang May Buhay”, which, according to them, they hadn’t performed for ages already. Even though they did it on-the-spot, they were still able to pull it off.
From being that young talented lady who was hailed as the grand champion of the early 2000s singing contest Star For A Night, Sarah Geronimo has gone on to become the Popstar Royalty. And Regine, who used to be its host, couldn’t be any prouder with how far her first anak-anakan in showbiz has already reached.
Thus, she wasn’t able to hold back her emotions as they sang “Pangarap Na Bituin” together. They were then joined by divas Angeline Quinto, Jaya, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Kuh Ledesma, Dulce, Pops Fernandez, KZ Tandingan, Yeng Constantino, and Morissette.
Are you excited as us to see Regine back again on the panel of judges for Idol Philippines Season 2? Then, you better not miss its premiere this coming June 25 and 26, Saturday and Sunday, on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, A2Z Channel 11 and iWantTFC.
