In the past four decades that he’s been in the industry, Gary Valenciano has indeed cemented his reputation as a multi-awarded inspirational singer-songwriter, musician, performer, film actor, television host, and music producer and arranger.
Through the years, he has produced a slew of hits that have become part of our lives. He may already be in his 60s and went through different medical conditions, yet he still never failed to enthrall us with his breath-taking and stirring performances on television and live shows that made us dance to our feet, sing along, and even both!
Aside from performing, we’ve also seen him take on judging stints in various ABS-CBN talent shows. And this year, he’s one of the newest judges of Idol Philippines for its upcoming second season!
But before we get to see him sit alongside fellow jurors Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, Chito Miranda, and Moira dela Torre, let’s look back first on some of his invigorating and heartfelt performances in ABS-CBN programs that truly moved us in this Kapamilya Spotlight feature!
Let’s start off with his moving rendition of the classic OPM hit “Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw” that he sang in an episode of the now-defunct morning talk show Kris TV. That performance turned some of the listeners emotional, including Zsa Zsa Padilla who was among the audience as it reminded her of her late partner Comedy King Dolphy.
As we all know, it’s not only Gary who’s musically-gifted in their family, as his children with wife Angeli Pangilinan apparently brandish his chops as a multi-talented performer. And in 2014, he and son Gab astounded us with their show-stopping song and dance number of his track “Shake It Off” on ASAP.
Four years after, they got reunited on the ASAP stage as Mr. Pure Energy celebrated his unstoppable 35 years in showbiz in 2018. He was joined by a number of young Kapamilya artists as he performed three of his all-time favorite hits, namely, “Hataw Na”, “Sa Yahweh Ang Sayaw”, and “Di Bale Na Lang”. Gary and Gab also exhibited their drum playing flair mid-performance.
The following year, he took us on a trip down memory lane as he sang to his very own 80’s hit “Eto Na Naman”, and were later on joined by ASAP all-stars.
There’s definitely no stopping Gary V from entertaining us, even in the midst of a pandemic. In February 2021, he surprised not just the It’s Showtime hosts, but the madlang people as well, when he joined the “Hide And Sing” segment as the celebrity “Tago-Kanta”. Amazingly, celebrity “Taga-Hula” Empress Schuck was able to guess that it was him beneath the PPE costume.
As a treat, he offered a concert-level performance for everyone in the studio and watching at their homes by making us sing and dance along to “Di Bale Na Lang”.
Later that year, he and then-new Kapamilya Janine Gutierrez serenaded us with his rendition of the 2015 Kapamilya Yuletide anthem “Thank You For The Love” during the ABS-CBN Christmas Special in December 2021.
The following year, Gary was able to display a bit of his funny side in his guesting in I Can See Your Voice. He may be a great performer or judge, but he wasn’t able to correctly choose the “see-nger” among the “secret songers” as he picked a “seen-tunado” in “Stage of Truth” segment. Nevertheless, he and everyone still enjoyed his duet with “Pedicab-Ang Makilala” Joshua San Antonio.
And just recently, the veteran performer took our breaths away with his heartfelt rendition of the classic OPM hit “Hanggang Sa Dulo Ng Walang Hanggan” in the “The Greatest Showdown” segment of ASAP Natin ‘To.
Are you excited as us to see Gary take on a new judging stint? Well, you better not miss an episode of Idol Philippines Season 2 once it begins this coming weekend, June 25 and 26, on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, A2Z Channel 11, iWantTFC, and TFC.
