Not merely a show that credits ordinary people’s extent for generosity and bigheartedness for others, the new inspirational documentary Iba ‘Yan goes further in extending help to these heroes in fulfilling their own zeal.
Such was granted to a charitable organization that provides shelter to the homeless.
In the pilot episode of Iba ‘Yan on Sunday, June 14, host Angel Locsin paid tribute to the St. Arnold Janssen Kalinga Center in Tayuman, Manila, for providing a transformational, dignified life for the homeless people it cares for.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, its head Fr. Fr. Flavie Villanueva, SVD, offered refuge to 400 street dwellers unable to comply with stay-at-home orders from the government. In their temporary safe shelters, Fr. Flavie and the Kalinga Center beneficiary volunteers would not only accommodate the homeless, but also provide food and nourishment, clean bathrooms, and even self-care items for grooming.
However, Fr. Flavie is faced with a big problem—how to move his homeless wards to another facility given that the current temporary nature of their current safe sheltering facility in Paco, Manila.
With the help of Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, Angel and her Iba ‘Yan team were able to find the necessary space for the homeless people in Fr. Flavie’s care. Angel surprised Fr. Flavie by bringing him to the facility in the Vitas Aquatic Center in Tondo, Manila, wherein an area had been reserved for the Kalinga Center beneficiaries. Iba ‘Yan also provided modular tents for the dwellers.
With the support of Sagip Kapamilya, Iba ‘Yan also donated 2,000 kilos of rice, 100 relief packs, and 40 gallons of alcohol to the Kalinga Center.
Angel also collaborated with another Iba ‘Yan honoree for the day, Engr. Albert Pizarro, owner ABP Construction and Trading in Quezon City, to provide livelihood for the homeless dwellers. They would be tasked to help in manufacturing in-demand PVC “foot tap” alcohol dispensers for government, medical, and commercial establishments.
As his construction business halted operations since the ECQ began, Engr. Albert was honored by Iba ‘Yan for supporting his affected workers with an additional source of income—building this ingenious device he referenced from the Internet that establishments will find necessary during the pandemic.
The episode likewise featured Fe Carandang, a 70-year-old retiree who owns a bicycle retail shop in Pasay City with her children. Nanay Fe was also recognized for her viral act of bequeathing a free bicycle to the 82-year-old Tatay Carlos Samonte, who walks from Villamor to Makati City for work. Team Iba ‘Yan then compensated Nanay Fe for that Php4,800 bicycle, doubling the amount.
Other honorees in the episode included the one-legged PWD delivery motorcycle rider Neil Garcia from Baguio, who continues to deliver essential items for frontliners during the pandemic. Iba ‘Yan shouldered the remaining installments for his newly acquired motorcycle.
Iba ‘Yan also highlighted the 8-year-old Marco Caneda from Talisay City, Cebu, a kid dancer who amuses people with his viral TikTok videos. Iba ‘Yan made his dream come true by allowing him to virtually meet his idol Vice Ganda, who also gave him a new smartphone which he can use to upload his new TikTok videos.
