As the first season of Hoy, Love You is about to end and the second season is currently in the works, its stars Karina Bautista, Aljon Mendoza, and Brenna Garcia graced the latest episode of Hotspot to talk about their experiences in filming it, as well as the learnings they gleaned from their co-stars.
Host DJ Jhai Ho commenced the interview with a little kumustahan, wherein the three guests shared the things that have been keeping them preoccupied nowadays and Brenna talked a bit about her journey from being a child star who started her career in Star Circle Quest and Goin’ Bulilit, to becoming a promising teen actress in Kadenang Ginto and now Hoy, Love You.
Their conversation then veered to the excitement they feel when it was confirmed that the sitcom is going to have a second season, as well as the experiences they had while doing the Season 1.
She also expressed how happy and grateful she is with the newest additions to the Hoy, Love You family as Hasna Cabral, Ritz Azul, and Lou Veloso will be joining them the in second season. Besides, she also thanked Head In-Charge of Production Linggit Tan-Marasigan for giving her character Kara a grandfather this time, making her on-screen family bigger and Kara’s life more vivacious.
The Pinoy Big Brother Otso alumna further described the program’s narrative as “very true-to-life” as it depicts the story of ordinary Filipino families and the dynamics in every extended or blended family setups. Aljon supported this by disclosing that Hoy, Love You is actually inspired by the life story of the ABS-CBN executive, thus this production really holds a special in her heart.
At the same time, he conveyed how extremely happy and excited he is as well for the next season because he loves the sitcom so much. He stated, “Kasi ang dami namin talagang ginagawa off-cam at saka bonding din lalo na kapag gabi. Pero siyempre, masaya ako kasi maraming nakakanood na ngayon, lalo may wider reach na siya.”
Brenna, on the other hand, was also asked how she feels on being part of the show.
According to the Goin’ Bulilit alumna, she could identify to her character Joana Rose since both of them are boyish, are raised by their fathers, and are loving daughters and grandchildren. But despite their similarities, she still found it difficult to portray her at first since she was called to the taping late, leaving her without any idea about the story nor her character. Thus, she had to review the script throughout their trip going to Lobo, Batangas and their director, Theodore Boborol, also helped her during the filming.
Meanwhile, DJ Jhai Ho quizzed Karina and Aljon how they prepare for and breathe life the roles given to them after their PBB stint. For Aljon, he imagines the possible backstory of his characters even though it is not on the script and adjusts his look in accordance to what a certain role requires. Karina echoed this and added that reading the script is really a must.
Since they got to bond for a long time because of their lock-in tapings, the three teen stars had the opportunity to get forge connections with their co-stars, who eventually became their instant friends on-and-off-work.
For Karina, she considers fellow PBB alumna Hasna, her roommate Brenna, and veteran actress Carmi Martin as the ones to whom she’s closest with. Brenna, on the other hand, also mentioned Karina, who is her yoga and workout partner, and Aljon, who loves to make fun of her. Meanwhile, it’s PBB Otso Big Winner Yamyam Gucong for Aljon, to whom he had random chikahan and deep talks with since they’re roommates.
As the first season was truly a success, they assured that the audiences are going to love the second season as well because it’s going to be more fun and we’re going to learn a lot more about the supporting characters at the same time, as the narrative will also focus on the side stories, too.
DJ Jhai Ho then asked Brenna how excited she is that the romantic-comedy series would be having a Season 2, to which she relayed how thankful she is by saying, “Sobrang natuwa po ako no’ng nakuha ko ‘yong call kasi siyempre bukod po sa may bagong project, marami rin po akong bagong taong nakikilala and siyempre new learnings din po. ‘Yon po talaga ang nilo-look forward ko na magkaroon ng experience na makatrabaho ‘yong iba’t ibang tao, paano ba sila sa set and kung ano ‘yong matututunan ko sa kanila.”
She continued, “So, very, very thankful lang po ako overall sa lahat po ng cast ng Hoy, Love You dahil marami po talaga silang naitulong sa akin, to the point na nagkaka-open upan ng buhay, nagkakaiyakan. Kumbaga, naging gano’n ka-close ‘yong relationship namin sa isa’t isa in a span of 10 days.”
When quizzed how they would describe Hoy, Love You Two Season 2 in one word, Aljon uttered “riot” but in a really fun way, Karina used the Visayan word “Puhon” as everything indeed fell into place “in God’s perfect time”, while Brenna commented “mas” since she believes that it’s going to be “mas masaya” and “mas malaki”.
For the last part of the interview, they played the “Use It Challenge,” wherein they had to think of other ridiculous ways of using the objects that DJ Jhai Ho would mention. Whoever losses had to take on the “Truth or Dare” as punishment. While they succeeded on the first item, which is “suklay” or comb, Aljon failed to keep the game rolling on the second item, which is belt. Since he lost, Aljon accepted the consequence and chose “truth” or answer the questions of Brenna and Karina.
Before letting them go, the host asked them regarding the tips and pieces of advice the lead stars and seasoned loveteam Joross Gamboa and Roxanne Guinoo-Yap had imparted them, which they really appreciated. As Aljon retorted that there’s actually a lot, Karina elaborated that the two were so honest and sincere in sharing to them their showbiz journey, as well as their struggles as on-screen pair. She also recounted how Roxanne cooked for them during their Girls’ Night, wherein she told them her life story, the reason why she decided to take a hiatus from showbiz, and what she did in order to compellingly portray her character. Brenna chimed in by saying how Roxanne’s room seemed to be a mini house since it’s complete with amenities.
