Sheryn Regis is one soaring belter, whose power and intensity in her performances can leave audiences in awe, starting with her career-boosting win in the 2003 Star In A Million singing competition.
But as her career went on full steam and eventually migrated on to the US eleven years ago for a prolific stint as a performer and as a TV host for a magazine show, she had to step back and strongly face the biggest challenge of her life—having been diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2016.
Sheryn decided to undergo surgery despite the risk of losing her precious singing voice, thinking only that she should survive her bout with the deadly disease for the sake of her beloved daughter. Four years later, Sheryn was blessed with not only being declared cancer-free, but also having the same “Crystal Voice of Asia” she has been known for all these years. And now, she is on the verge of kickstarting a return to the music scene.
In this episode of KumuStar Ka, Sheryn received a heartwarming surprise of watching video messages from people so dear to her to wish her well in her continuing journey as an artist. First was her manager Michiko Unso, who expressed her admiration for the strength that Sheryn has shown despite all the trials that came in the way, and expressed her gratitude for all the help that Sheryn has given her and everyone.
“We are so blessed to have you in our lives. We love you so much. Thank you for everything that you do for us. Thank you for being generous, loving, compassionate even to the people that we don’t know na tinutulungan mo. Maraming salamat kahit hindi mo pinagsasabi ang mga kabutihang ginagawa mo. Maraming maraming salamat. You’re such an empowered woman. Thank you for sharing that kind of energy to us,” Michiko told a very emotional Sheryn as she congratulated her for her upcoming single.
But Sheryn was even more surprised, delighted and teary-eyed when she saw her daughter Lourdes “Sweety” Echiverri next onscreen. The young girl shared to the whole world how proud she is of her mom and how important she is in her life. “I love you and I appreciate you so much. You’re the strongest woman that I know. Your tender and warm love, I take that with me and become the woman that you want me to be. Recently, the distance has been killing the both of us, especially since my birthday. And sometimes, I wish that I could just hold you in my arms right now...You are the most amazing woman that I know and because of that I get to grow along with you even through the distance. I just hope you’re doing well and I can’t wait to see you again. I love you!”
After expressing her gratitude to KumuStar Ka for the touching videos, Sheryn said, “For me, no woman is weak. We can always run the world,” She also thanked Sweety and Michiko for continuously strengthening and motivating her even during the times she felt down and out.
“I hope people will still remember me and support me with my music. I just continued this because I know this is a gift from God and I cannot not share this,” Sheryn added, saying that she wishes to inspire women to be empowered through her music, as the show marked International Women’s Day.
