What makes a good comeback in the entertainment industry?
No absolute formula exists, but being part of the country’s top-rating TV program could definitely help.
FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano has since become a comebacking artist’s haven wherein numerous stars we haven’t seen for a while make their surprising yet swashbuckling return. Here are some of them.
Former senator and veteran actor Lito Lapid was introduced to the new generation when he joined the cast of FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano in 2017. He plays the role of Romulo “Leon” Dumaguit, who was formerly one of the leaders of a rebel group named Pulang Araw. He now joins Cardo (Coco Martin), together with their other rebel members into forming a vigilante group called the “Vendetta”. Their group seeks to take vengeance on the corrupt people who betrayed them. Lito’s previous teleserye appearance was in the 2013’s family action fantasy series titled Little Champ.
Following the footsteps of his father Lito Lapid, Mark Lapid is a politician and an actor who also made his comeback in the show last year. He plays the role of Anton “Tigre” del Mundo, who was the former rival of Cardo (Coco Martin) in the rebel group Pulang Araw. He eventually resolved his issues with Cardo, and continues to support him and Leon (Lito Lapid) being a member of their current vigilante group the “Vendetta”. Mark previously portrayed a special role in the 2013 teleserye Little Champ.
Singer-songwriter, actor and comedian, Janno Gibbs made his comeback in the world of teleseryes when he became part of FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano’s fourth season. He played the role of Bruno Moreno, who helped Cardo (Coco Martin) together with his family after Cardo and his group got back to Manila. His character supported the Vendetta until he died in the show last January 2018, when he was captured by a group of unknown men. Janno’s previous appearance as an actor was when he became part of an extended cast of a TV network drama.
A feisty comedienne, Mitch Valdes was given a chance to be part of the main cast in a teleserye when she joined FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano last year. She plays the role of Kapitana Gina Magtanggol, the barangay captain of the town where Cardo’s family currently settles. Mitch was delighted in her witty role saying on an interview last September 2017, “Juicy 'yung role. Love na love ko 'yung role pero pasaway siya. Huwag po kayong gumaya sa kanya.” Before landing her role, Mitch appeared on the 2015 film “As One” as Emma, 2014 film “Overtime” as Vi, and 2014 film “Diary ng Panget” as Eya’s Auntie.
Famous for his striking performances in his antagonist portrayals and action movie lead roles, Joko Diaz made his comeback on the show last year. He played the role of Senator Mateo F. De Silva, a political figure who was also a drug dealer. He worked alongside with one of the main antagonists in the action-drama, Don Emilio Syquia (Eddie Garcia).
Veteran actor Julio Diaz famous for his riveting character portrayals on film and TV since the late 80s, made his comeback on FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano in 2017. He played the role of Julian Valerio, who worked for the Cebu-based drug syndicate. He then became an ally of Cardo (Coco Martin), when he met him in prison. Julio had since appeared on another Kapamilya teleserye, Asintado.
Singer-actress Angeline Quinto returned the teleserye fold as a guest on the show last year. She played the role of Regine “Jean” Moreno, who helped Cardo (Coco Martin) when they got back to Manila, together with her brother Bruno Moreno (Janno Gibbs). Before her guest role in FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, Angeline Quinto last appearance on a teleserye was in Nathaniel in 2015 as Jessie.
After a series of unfortunate events in their family for the past years, actor politician Jolo Revilla made his comeback in the entertainment industry when he became part of FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano in its fifth season this year. He plays the role of Casilag, one of President Oscar Hidalgo’s PSG officers. He is one of the newly introduced characters on the show, and everyone is on the watch as his character continues to unfold. Before his role in the series, Jolo appeared for a special role in the 2013 teleserye Little Champ as Gio Suarez.
Actor director Rowell Santiago became part of the show’s fifth season as the series approached its third book focusing on the political arc. He plays the role of Oscar Hidalgo, the President of the Republic of the Philippines. Rowell’s previous appearance was when he played the role of Mike Macaraig in the 2015 teleserye You’re My Home.
Actor, TV host and politician, Edu Manzano made teleserye comeack in the show’s fifth season this year. He plays the role of Vice President Lucas Cabrera. Edu last appeared on a Kapamilya teleserye last year on My Dear Heart, playing the guest role of Dr. Luke Divinagracia, father of Dra. Margaret Divinagracia (Coney Reyes) in a flashback scene.
Multi-awarded actress Dawn Zulueta made her comeback after a long sabbatical from doing teleseryes as part of the action drama series’ fifth season. She plays the role of Marissa Hidalgo, the First Lady of the Republic of the Philippines. Dawn’s previous appearance as part of the main cast on a teleserye was in 2015, when she played the role of Marian Angeles-Fontanilla in You’re My Home.
Former beauty queen turned actress Alice Dixson joined the show’s fifth season this year. She plays the role of Catherine Cabrera, the second lady of the republic of the Philippines. Before she achieved her role on FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, she previously appeared on a remake of a teleserye in a competing network.
Mark Anthony Fernandez
Mark Anthony Fernandez made his comeback in the show’s fifth season this year. He plays the role of Brandon Cabrera, a congressman and the son of the Vice President Lucas Cabrera. He portrays an antagonist in the story—a political figure who is involved in gun smuggling. Mark’s last appearance before his arrest was on a drama comedy romance series aired on a TV network.
After three years out of the teleserye limelight, Jessy Mendiola returns as Andrea "Andy" B. Collins, a registered nurse who currently helps Cardo (Coco Martin), along with the Vendetta to release Romulo “Leon” Dumaguit (Lito Lapid) on his hospital arrest. Jessy’s last appearance on a teleserye was when she played the role of Grace Fontanilla-Vergara in the 2015 teleserye You’re My Home.
Former “Viva Hotbabes” Maui Taylor, Katya Santos, Jaycee Parker, Gwen Garci and Zara Lopez delighted everyone with their comeback. Their characters’ names are Rose (Maui), Blossom (Katya), Marigold (Jaycee), and Dalia (Zara). They play the role of being a group of hostesses called the “Flower Power Girls”, managed by Becky Balaraw (Minnie Aguilar). The Filipino pop girl group became famous in the early 2000’s.
Approaching its third year soon, FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano continues to dazzle and grip viewers with its impressive, grand and thought provoking narrative. Moreso, we are stunned with familiar faces who stage their incredible comebacks in the show. With its third book started, we are excited to see more of these returning artists to be featured in the show.
