Excruciating back pains are somewhat widespread and common, and people tend to just brush it off with a smirk that it will all wear off by itself or through pain relievers.
In “Doc Knows Best” on Saturday, May 30, we learn that such backaches should not be ignored and could be a sign of a more serious ailment that needs proper treatment.
Rehab medicine specialist Dr. Joy Ples- Evangelista of the Asian Hospital and Medical Center said in this episode that it is pertinent that those suffering back pains, especially those who experience symptoms or irregularities beyond the back area, should consult a doctor right away. These include chest pains, presence of lumps or inflammation, fever, and extended discomfort towards the legs.
Back pains are characterized with deep and continuing pain that lead to a stiffening of the muscles or spasms. This is due to strenuous activities and exercises, such as carrying heavy loads.
Dr. Evangelista also enumerated and described different types of back pain-related injuries or conditions, such as slipped or herniated discs, scoliosis, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis.
Medication are available to counter such backaches, such as muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory drugs, she said, while emphasizing several therapeutic procedures such as heat therapy or warm compress, ultrasound, and stretching exercises.
But to really prevent the recurrence of back pains, keeping yourself fit, with regular exercise, especially stretching routines, Dr. Evangelista added.
