Any doting mom or dad would do everything in their power to see their family happy, though sometimes even efforts done with love and sincerity can backfire. FPJ’s Batang Quiapo paints this reality through the characters of Marsing (Pen Medina) and Nita (Susan Africa) willing to make all kinds of sacrifices for their daughter Mokang (Lovi Poe). They say that those who are born poor in Quiapo will die poor in Quiapo. But, to Marsing and Nita, poverty will not hinder their dream to see Mokang succeed, thus they strive to give her education through scholarship. In the first scene, Nita told Mokang that her diploma is their only ticket to a better life.

They will make a way to provide Mokang with her wants, like the grand debut party of her dreams, even if they struggle with debt. Mokang turned down the idea at first, aware of their financial woes. However, Marsing insisted and decided to pawn his small property with their greedy landlord, Roda (Joel Lamangan). The latter had sour comments about the family partying lavishly despite their financial struggles. Then again, Marsing and Nita were committed to creating happiness for their unica hija.

Besides, Mokang has been through so much just to organize her dream birthday party. She even lost the first amount her parents gave. But instead of getting discouraged, Marsing took this as a sign to push through with the party. He said not even circumstances must stop Mokang to go after what makes her happy. As parents, they conceal their sufferings just to give their child comfort.

On the day of the much-awaited occasion, Nita expressed her excitement for her daughter’s coming-of-age, and said that no matter what happens, Mokang will remain their only ‘baby.’ Marsing likewise shared a heart-to-heart talk with Mokang during their ’18 roses’ dance.

However, their life was driven into a downward spiral after Mokang’s debut. She lost her scholarship due to a fight involving her classmates and childhood friend Tanggol (Coco Martin). To make it even worse, Marsing failed to pay Roda, forcing him to engage in illegal transactions. He pleaded with Roda anew to extend the deadline for the amount he borrowed. He also looked for an organ buyer, though he was rejected due to old age. Marsing resorted to a dangerous modus where he pretends to have been hit by a car. Unfortunately, the supposed fake accident turned real when JP (Dino Imperial) injured him in a hit-and-run incident.
