Joel Lamangan both annoys and entertains as Roda in FPJ’s Batang Quiapo. Viewers are convinced that he adds vibrant color to the series with his witty and hilarious lines, which Kapamilya Toplist has compiled in this video.
He's absolutely hilarious in his conversations with Marsing (Pen Medina) and Nita (Susan Africa), sensing that the couple is still pretending to be wealthy even as they ask Roda for a place to stay. He bursts into mocking laughter and says, “Kung ano’ng bilis ng pag-angat ninyo, ‘yun din ang bilis ng pagbagsak ninyo.” And then wraps up the amusing reality check with, “Ang tawag diyan, karma.”
Although viewers disliked Roda for his arrogance, they couldn't help but cheer him on as he gave the old couple a taste of their own medicine as they had become instantly high and mighty when their daughter, Mokang (Lovi Poe), married the wealthy Ramon (Christopher de Leon). Marsing’s pride was wounded because Roda made sure he still had rights to their house, which Marsing had mortgaged to him. Marsing thought Roda was implying that he and Nita were bad people. When Marsing asked if Roda really thought that about him, Roda’s hilarious response was, “’Yung totoo? My lips are sealed.”
Marsing's bad character was evident when Roda helped them find a buyer for their jewellery, yet Marsing proved his greediness by not giving the agreed-upon referral fee commission. In response, Roda resorted to angry humor, lashing out at the couple, “Dapat hindi Dimaculangan ang apelyido n’yo. Dapat ang apelyido n’yo ‘kulang-kulangan’ kasi kulang kayo sa pagbabayad, kulang kayo sa isang salita.” The way he uttered the word “ganid” with so much intensity had us in stitches.
In the scene where Marsing and Nita informed Roda that it was the day their son Edwin (Ping Medina) would undergo his first court hearing for the charges against him, Roda sarcastically remarked that he was praying for Edwin's release from jail. However, as soon as he turned away, he whispered to himself, “Sana makulong nang matagal si Edwin. Ayaw kong maging housemate pa rito ‘yan. Ano’ng akala niya dito sa bahay ko? Pinoy Big Brother ang peg!?”
We have mixed emotions about whether to be annoyed or amused by Roda, but we certainly agree with his witty real talk sometimes, especially when he advised Marsing and Nita to learn to save money to find their daughter Mokang instead of just boasting.
But then our ‘gigil’ returned when he bragged that he had saved enough money to leave the slums and move to a bigger house. Unfortunately, his wallet containing all his savings was snatched, so he had to return to Marsing and Nita’s old house. You knew he was back to square one when he called the couple "my friends" again.
Since he was the one in greater need, Marsing and Nita made him their house helper. The scene where he cleaned the entire house was totally rib-tickling. While waxing the floor, he quipped, “Fino-floor wax ko kayo para naman maganda kayo at makintab, at ma-appreciate ng mga walanghiyang nakatira dito.” He then clashed with his neighbors and insisted that they were not equals because he would always be the one in a better position.
