Banana Sundae, formerly known as Banana Split, has been making us laugh for nearly a decade. Our Sundays have been filled with laugher and good vibes since it was reformatted and transposed to its current timeslot.
Throughout its whole run, the top-rating comedy gag show has been through various transformations, such as its name -- from Banana Split (2008-2011), to Banana Split: Extra Scoop (2011-2015), and to its current metamorphosis. It used to have shortened versions, namely Banana Split: Daily Servings and Banana Split: Afternoon Delight that were both aired weekdays. Due to its high ratings, the network also decided to launch a weeknight version of the show tagged as Banana Nite broadcast after the late night news program Bandila.
Aside from the change in the program’s name, format and schedules, a lot of artists also became a part of the BananaKada, which was initially comprised of Angelica Panganiban, Roxanne Guinoo, Cristine Reyes, Valerie Concepcion, RR Garcia, Dianne Medina, and Princess Ryan.
At present, Angelica is still in the show, but is joined by Jason Gainza, John Prats, Pokwang, JC De Vera, Pooh, Ryan Bang, Pokwang, Badji Mortiz, Sunshine Garcia, Jobert Austria, and their newest members Jennie Kim, Ritz Azul, and Empoy Marquez.
As Banana Sundae marks their ninth year anniversary this year, here’s the rundown of the celebrities who were once part of the successful comedy gag show:
Fresh from her transfer to the Kapamilya network, Cristine didn’t only exhibit her flair in drama, but in comedy as well when she became one of pioneer cast members of Banana Split.
Even though she's a hands-on homemaker to the Khatibi household, she has remained active in showbiz with the leading role on Tubig at Langis. Cristine recently joined the celebrity talent show I Can Do That where she emerged as the second placer and the “Takas” episode of Ipaglaban Mo.
From being the conservative and demure gal during her stint in the 2004 talent search Star Circle Quest where she was hailed as the second grand teen questor, Roxanne became one of the most promising actresses of her generation as she starred in various teleseryes.
However, in 2008, she shocked everyone when she posed for Maxim magazine and did daring scenes in one of the teleseryes she topbilled Ligaw na Bulaklak. This sudden bold move paved her way to be a part of the gag show.
She’s now happily married to businessman Elton Yap and has three adorable kids.
Apart from her appearances in some of the Kapamilya shows such as Love Spell, Maalaala Mo Kaya, and Your Song, in the early years of her transfer to the network, she was also picked to be one of the first cast of the 2008 incarnation of Banana Split.
She stays active in showbiz and is in a relationship with a Fil-Am court clerk based in Guam.
She rose to fame when she won the 2006 Tadjock Search and became a regular segment host of the now-defunct satirical comedy news program Wazzup Wazzup shown on Studio 23 (now ABS-CBN Sports and Action).
Aside from hosting, her talent in dancing was also discovered when she joined the second season of the celebrity dance contest U Can Dance Version 2 and had her acting debut on the youth-oriented show Let’s Go.
In 2008, she was tapped to be a part of Banana Split but that gig ended abruptly when it was reformatted. She’s still active in acting, however she is more focused on being one of the hosts in the morning show of the government-owned channel PTV-4 and with their family’s slimming, beauty, and wellness center.
Her 10-year relationship with longtime boyfriend Rodjun Cruz is getting stronger.
From being a dancer, RR’s wit promoted her to become a co-host of the now-defunct noontime gameshow Wowowee and one of the pioneers of Banana Split.
She later on appeared in several Kapamilya shows and is currently pro cager JJ Helterbrand's girlfriend.
Aside from the situational comedy Aalog-alog where he first showed his funny side, Zanjoe was reunited with his co-stars in the said program and displayed his surprising humor in the next season of Banana Split as one of its recurring cast members.
He’s considered as one of the most bankable leading men in showbiz and headlined the recently-concluded drama My Dear Heart.
Melai Cantiveros and Jason Francisco
Right after they stepped out from the Pinoy Big Brother House in 2010, Melai and Jason’s on-of-a-kind tandem has been a major hit, giving them tons of opportunities, mostly comedy roles, including their stint in Banana Split.
On the show, they were able to exhibit and hone their comic talent. Melai and Jason's four year-marriage remains strong and they now have two beautiful daughters, Mela and Stella.
Believe it or not, the unica hija of seasoned actress Jean Garcia once became a BananaKada. From her supporting and crybaby roles in her past projects, Jennica had her debut as a Kapamilya through Banana Nite in 2014.
She is now happily married to actor Alwyn Uytingco and a proud mother. She is now a certified natural infant hygiene coach to other parents.
From being a commercial model, Jef became more visible in TV when he joined the wild and cheerful bunch of Banana Nite.
Since then, she has been in various programs such as Maalaala Mo Kaya, Ipaglaban Mo, and currently in La Luna Sangre as the vampire Karen.
Boom has been active in show business since 1986 through the variety show That’s Entertainment. He had supporting roles in many shows, and became part of Banana Split from 2013 to 2015.
He’s the biological father of former Pinoy Boyband Superstar contestant Tony Labrusca, who now plays the young werewolf Jake in La Luna Sangre. He is now engaged to actress Desiree del Valle, who happens to appear in the fantasy action drama as well.
The sassy and pretty younger sister of Toni Gonzaga became well-known when she top-billed the youth-oriented sitcom Let’s Go! and Go Kada Go! in 2007 and appeared in several shows afterwards.
In her comeback to the Kapamilya channel in 2014, she became a host-turned- surprise house guest in the popular reality show Pinoy Big Brother and later on became a part of Banana Split.
She’s now one of the country’s most sought-after hosts and well-loved actresses and even released self-help books. Moreover, she co-owns milk tea shop Happy Cup and recently hinted to launch her own vlog where she eyes boyfriend Mikee Morada to be her videographer.
Popularly known as the frontman of the rock band Callalily, Kean also entered the world of acting in 2010 and was initially paired with Alex Gonzaga.
But his brilliance in acting was more exposed when he starred in his first ever movie Ang Babae sa Septic Tank headlined by award-winning actress Eugene Domingo.
He was later on reunited with loveteam Alex in Banana Split in 2012. He continues to make good music with his band and appearances in several show and flicks. He is now also a loving husband to actress Chynna Hortaleza and daughter Stellar.
Many of us might not be aware but this up and coming comedienne shared her comical talent in Banana Split. A nurse by profession, Alora pursued her childhood dream of being an actress and successfully made it.
Aside from the gag show, she also appeared in LUV U, Mirabella, and currently portrays the funny and domineering aunt Winter Sison in La Luna Sangre and the resident jester in ASAP Chillout.
After being a part of Banana Sundae for a long time, Jessy Mendiola's departure from the show was a shock to many. People enjoyed her stint on the show because of her natural wit and of course her eye-catching visuals and sexiness.
She now is in a blissful relationship with Luis Manzano with more showbiz projects lined up. Catch more of the rip-roaring fun on Banana Sundae, Sunday afternoons after ASAP.
