“Buddy” is a word that is often said on A Soldier’s Heart. But what does it really mean? From sharing their feelings to protecting one another, these are the moments that show the true meaning of comradeship among Alex (Gerald Anderson), Abe (Carlo Aquino), Michael (Nash Aguas), and Benjie (Yves Flores).
During their scout rangers training, one rule that Phil (Jerome Ponce) often breaks is bringing outside food to their camp. So, when Michael collapsed after their secret trip to the store, Phil’s immediate worry was whether the officers discovered what he has been up to. Luckily, Michael did not out anyone. In the end, he was the only one who could not continue the training due to his gastric ulcer.
In another instance, when Phil made a mistake that almost cost someone’s life, it was Abe who took the blame. Instead of letting Phil be punished, he hoped that his sacrifice would teach Phil a lesson on. “Wala namang laglagan dito kaya nga kapatiran,” Jethro (Elmo Magalona) added.
It is not only during training, however, when these soldiers prove their loyalty to one another. Michael had to give all his money to his parents in order to keep their home. But this meant that he would not be able to visit them. So, everyone decided to chip in using money they saved up and help pay for Michael’s trip.
While they were tasked with doing laundry, Michael brought up the stereotypes associated with Moros. Abe then explained how religion is not the basis of morality, “Kung masama kang tao, masama kang tao, moro ka man o kristiyano.” Alex then added that it is part of their job to prove that people with different beliefs can unite.
They would also play basketball, tease each other about love, and more! There is no doubt that the bond of Alex, Michael, Abe and Benjie go beyond their duty as soldiers. Which of these scenes is your favorite?
