Early in 2020, as the world was gripped with crises after crises, deep hatred rumbled among cable TV viewers in South Korea, and likewise among K-Drama fanatics in the Philippines watching the same-night streaming of The World of a Married Couple on online platforms.
It’s because of one feisty, audacious, unscrupulous character that made people’s blood boil throughout the series. Surely, the name “Da-kyung” would ring a bell after watching episode after episode in the wee hours of the morning.
Da-kyung will be introduced to Philippine viewers in a similarly enraging yet enrapturing way when The World of a Married Couple premieres on the Kapamilya Channel this Monday, June 15. For the locally dubbed version of the sensational KDrama she will be known as Denise the unflinching, shameless mistress of Tony, played by Park Hae-joon.
For a conventional drama on marriage infidelity, an actress who plays such a role should offer a strong, intimidating persona—an established performer who already has commanded attention for quite some time.
But in The World of a Married Couple, the production team gambled on a budding yet stunning actress in the person of Han So-hee, a relatively fresh newcomer in the KDrama scene. It was widely reported that So-hee first came to Seoul alone with just 300,000 won (USD250) in her pocket. She would then work part-time as a waitress in bars and beer joints to support herself before talent scouts discovered her and brought her into the modelling scene.
She first appeared onscreen as a gorgeous, imposing figure on SHINee’s 2016 MV “Tell Me What To Do”. She would also later appear on another MV, Jung Yong-hwa’s “That Girl” in 2017. She was then first casted in a KDrama for a minor role on Reunited Worlds in 2017 before scaling up to major portrayals on Money Flower that same year, and on 100 Days My Prince in 2018.
So-hee would soon land another KDrama role in After The Rain, and appear in one more MV—KPop singer-heartthrob Roy Kim’s “The Hardest Part.”
Then, in 2019, So-hee would earn acclaim and widespread attention when she took on the role of a serial killer’s daughter who would switch moral allegiances. She received praise for her performance and this led to a huge turnaround in her career.
And, her biggest break came—as the young mistress on what has become as the highest rated cable TV series in Korean history.
You may have been furious with her every move in the show, but actually she is incredibly captivating, as we see in these pics.
So calm down, Kapamilya. Loving to hate her is understandable because of her impressive, outstanding work on The World of a Married Couple. In fact, her performance earned her a nomination for Best New Actress in the recent 56th Baeksang Arts Awards.
Don’t miss the premiere of The World of a Married Couple this Monday, June 15 after FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano on the Kapamilya Channel.
