Despite his dark and scary nature, Grim Reaper (Lee Dong Wook) has proven that he’s really not that akin to the “angel of death” that we usually know in Goblin. Aside from having good looks that has got everyone smitten, he also possesses sensitive and soft personality that make us fall deeply in love with him instead of getting afraid. All throughout, Grim Reaper had us laughing with his awkwardness, ignorance, and bromance with Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) and thrilled with his romance with Sunny (Yoo In-Na). But admit it, being too amused with every scene could have made us overlook his good deeds in the hit Korenovela “Goblin”. He might be basically cold, but he proved that his heart is warm.
1. He’s thoughtful Not feeling well?
Let Grim Reaper give you a warm, big hug! Remember that time when Kim Shin was depressed over Erin (Kim Go-Eun) and Grim Reaper didn’t know how to make him feel better again? He thought of embracing him, but the former seemed not to like it, though. Who would also have thought that a gloomy creature like him could also pull off a very simple yet heartwarming surprise for the Goblin’s Bride? Grim Reaper told her that he was the one who came up with the idea, Kim Shin paid for the cake, and Derrick (Yook Sungjae) bought it. A for effort and teamwork!
2. He’s protective.
Just like normal humans, Grim Reaper doesn’t want his loved-ones to be in danger. During one of their casual dates, he was so anxious not to let Sunny walk near the curb because, according to him, it’s too hazardous. Another chance that he saved his mi amore was when she accidentally slipped on the “haunted bridge” where they usually meet and he caught her through his back while he’s invisible. Sunny eerily found herself floating in air. Despite the fact that Sunny already broke up with him, Grim Reaper still heeded to Kim Shin’s request to guard her from the evil and manipulative eunuch Park Joong-heon (Kim Byung-chul) from the Goryeo Dynasty. And who would forget his heroic moment with his frenemy Kim Shin when they saved Erin from the bad guys who kidnapped her? Supposedly, his job is to fetch people to death but, in this case, he spared someone’s life from imminent danger.
3. He’s always willing to help.
A friend in need is a friend indeed. His bromance with Kim Shin definitely could affirm to that popular aphorism. It was already time for his “beauty rest.” However, Goblin was desperate about what to wear and hold once Erin would unexpectedly summon him, thus his ever reliable friend Grim Reaper grudgingly sacrificed a few minutes of his sleep just to give his solicited advice. Aside from advice, Grim Reaper is also willing to lend his best friend Kim Shin money whenever he needs it, especially when he’s down broke.
4. He’s too polite.
For an “angel of death”, Grim Reaper is really strange and good-looking. But for a supernatural creature who just acts like a human, he is certainly awkwardly cute. Since he was still in the process of adjusting to a mortal life, his courteousness was highly noticeable, especially during those times he talks with Sunny either personal or through the phone. Or maybe it was just his way of showing his intimidation and his attempt to look cute for her beloved?
5. He’s playful.
One of the best reasons why we are hooked with this Korean drama is the love-hate relationship of Grim Reaper and Goblin. But we like it most when they are having their incessant one-upmanship and childish antics. His melancholic personality doesn’t hinder him to exude the joy and warmth he has in his heart. Of course, we will never ever forget their knife fight with the aid of their telekinetic ability and that “Goblin chant’’ sung and demonstrated by Grim Reaper for him to avenge and piss off his frenemy.
Witness the culmination of Grim Reaper’s good-naturedness in the last week of the hit Koreanovela “Goblin”, weeknights after A Love To Last on Primetime Bida.
