When we hear the word “goblin” the first image that comes to mind is a short, ugly, monstrous, and powerful creature that has thin bodies topped with oversized and usually hairless heads with big ears and either red or yellow beady eyes.
But our perceptions began to change when Korea introduced their unconventional version of a goblin or Dokkaebi through the phenomenal romantic fantasy series “Goblin” – handsome and looks like a normal human but still possesses magical abilities played by seasoned actor Gong Yoo. Thus, instead of getting frightened, the world was captivated.
Aside from his physical appearance that everyone’s gushing for, Kim Shin bewitched us with his fascinating charm in the drama. But what has he done for us to fall deeply in love with his character?
His genuine love for Erin
The times our unlikely hero came to his beloved’s rescue is innumerable. With just one blow to an open flame, expect that he’s going to be behind Erin anywhere, anytime. He’s always in the know of her bride’s whereabouts and activities and doesn’t want her to be harmed. Remember those times when he and Grim Reaper (Lee Dong Wook) saved her from loan sharks who kidnapped her and when he sacrificed his own life to spare her from the evil Park Joong-heon (Kim Byung-chul)? Actually, he’s been her guardian since he helped her mother, who was then pregnant to her, during a moment of great danger.
He can also ride all the things she wanted to do, such as eating beef and going to Canada in a snap!
He’s a supportive friend
His love-hate relationship with nemesis-turned-friend Grim Reaper is one of the reasons why everyone’s addicted to the drama. Although they frequently have petty fights, their concern and love for each other remains. Kim Shin was there to support and advise his friend from making initial moves to rekindling his romance with Sunny (Yoo In-Na).
He’s a loving (past) brother to Sunny
As the plot unfolded, we found out that Sunny used to be Kim Shin’s little sister during their past lives. Thus, he exerted all of his efforts to show how much he loves his sibling just like any good big brother would do. He offered her everything she used to love in the past and didn’t give up until she agreed to talk about their kinship. Besides, he also warned Grim Reaper to never, ever hurt Sunny and to stay away from her.
His natural humor and awesome magical capabilities
He may seem serious often, but our dearest Goblin also knows how to tickle our funny bones. By simply throwing off unsolicited remarks and puns out of nowhere, and even his corny jokes could make us chuckle.
Another thing that also makes him amazing in our eyes is his incredible power to teleport, to influence the weather and nature through his moods, and to interfere with the lives of humans.
Remember that time in the café where he became a cupid and make two mere strangers fall in love with each other? Daebak!
He’s simply adorable
Whatever he does, Kim Shin effortlessly makes audiences thrilled not only with his good looks, but with his outrageous behavior and, maybe his tinge og arrogance as well? Who would not laugh when he and Erin had their date in an arcade and cinema and he fearfully screamed watching the opening scenes “Train to Busan” (Gong Yoo’s 2016 film prior to Goblin)? And during those times that he heard nice and sweet things from his bride, such as Erin calling him “my Mister”, tagging herself as a “married woman” during their lunch date, and of course their exchanges of “Saranghaeyo”? His recurring one-upmanship with frenemy Grim Reaper should also not be forgotten. Whether he’s happy, sad, angry, or scared, Kim Shin definitely captures our hearts.
Don’t miss the remaining moments we have with Kim Shin and the gang as the hit Koreanovela “Goblin” is on its last week in Primetime Bida, after A Love To Last.
