She recently made headlines for bagging the “Best Actress” trophy in the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards for her notable performance in the controversial, smash hit Korean drama that The World Of A Married Couple. And now, more Filipinos will get to know Kim Hee-ae and see her formidable acting chops, too, as the series will be broadcast on the soon-to-be launched Kapamilya Channel beginning on June 15.
While her name, arguably, isn’t resonant for some of us who have been watching Hallyu series through the years until her remarkable stint in the recently-concluded cable drama, the 53-year-old veteran actress has been actually in the business for more than three decades and is among South Korea’s most celebrated, award-winning and respected personalities.
Before we get to see her on local television for the first time, let’s take a look back on some of her most memorable stints through the years that indeed contributed to who she is at present.
She was a high school freshman then when she was discovered and got hired to be a commercial model for a school uniform brand in 1982. She had her acting debut in the 1983 film The First Day of the Twentieth Year and appeared on her first-ever television drama A Woman’s Heart in 1986, which gave her her initial “Best New Actress” trophies from KBS Drama Awards and the 23rd Baeksang Arts Awards.
This propelled her to stardom and went on to have a highly successful career on Korean television over the next decades. Her performances in the series Forget Tomorrow (1988), Beyond the Mountains (1991), and Sons and Daughters (1992) brought her Top Excellence recognitions, three “Daesang” or Grand Prize awards, and another “Best Actress” trophy from Baeksang Arts Awards for her brilliant acting performances.
Various award-giving bodies went on to notice and recognize Kim Hee-ae’s award-winning stints in her next projects, namely, The Stormy Season (1993), Love and Marriage (1995), Wife (2003), Perfect Love (2003), My Husband’s Woman (2007), How Long I’ve Kissed (2012), Secret Affair (2014), and The World Of A Married Couple (2020), as these bestowed her more acting accolades.
All in all, she was able to garner six “daesangs”, or the highest honor of a certain awarding ceremony, throughout her 37 years in the entertainment scene – a feat that’s definitely both hard to achieve and surpass.
The multi-awarded actress also appeared in nine more films through the years following her debut in 1983, with her performance in the 2018 South Korean drama film Herstory being the most acknowledged as she reaped three Best Actress awards and four nominations from it.
