From being an adorable and talented teen singer who brought us the all-time favorite “Mr. DJ”, we have seen how Sharon Cuneta skyrocketed into becoming one of the most prominent, versatile, and influential artists in the country.
In the past four decades, celebrities and non-celebrities alike looked up to her for being a formidable and prolific singer, sold-out concert performer, and a top-caliber and award-winning actress, thus her moniker “Megastar”. But what made us admire her even more, especially by those close to her, is her genuine kindness, sincerity, and affection, as well as being a doting and awesome homemaker to her beloved family.
And just in time for Mother’s Day, the Megastar is poised to stage an online fundraising concert titled “Sharon: Love and Music, A Mother’s Day Special”, which is a heart-warming tribute to the brave, dedicated, and loving mothers like her. The concert promises to deliver an intimate concert experience as she sings some of the most popular and well-loved tunes that will bring joy, love, and inspiration to every home, with accompaniments courtesy of Maestro Louie Ocampo. It will be streamed live on ABS-CBN Entertainment’s official Facebook page, YouTube channel and website this coming May 10 at 8pm.
But before we get to catch her on her first-ever digital concert, let’s take a look back on her unforgettable and majestic live performances on ASAP in the recent years that absolutely depicted her unparalleled journey in the local entertainment scene.
Sharon wasn’t able to hide her thrill upon seeing the Filipiniana-cladded ASAP singers emerged onstage as they sang her classic hit “Bituing Walang Ningning” together with the choral group UP Singing Ambassadors to celebrate her 51st birthday in 2017. Toni Gonzaga and Martin Nievera started the number off with their rendition of “Pangarap Na Bituin”.
At the same time, she also let us hear her first single from her much-awaited comeback album on that same year, titled “Hanggang Dulo”.
The celebration concluded with the Megastar singing her another classic record “To Love Again”, which was also the theme song of the 1983 film she starred with the late actor Miguel Rodriguez bearing the same title. The ASAP Singers returned onstage to sing “Bituing Walang Ningning” again, this time with her two daughters Frankie and Miel Pangilinan and protégés in the Teens and Kids editions of The Voice Philippines.
Her beloved husband Senator Kiko Pangilinan and unico hijo Miguel also graced the show to greet her personally on her birthday. She was also awarded with a plaque of recognition and appreciation for unprecedented contributions in OPM.
Contrary to the title of the movie she was promoting then, the Cinemalaya entry “Pamilyang Hindi Lumuluha”, the Megastar wasn’t able to contain her emotions while singing Carpenters’ “You”, which was seemingly her ode to her throngs of adoring fans.
To celebrate her 52nd birthday in 2018, her “Unexpectedly Yours” co-stars Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto enthusiastically danced to Swing Out Sisters’ “Breakout” which was being sang by her and stand-up comedians and ASAP young singers.
On her 40th anniversary in showbiz, she was joined by her real-life friends and fellow icons Randy Santiago, Ogie Alcasid, and Martin Nievera onstage to perform Kenny Loggins’ “Whenever I Call You Friend”. She also sang her very own “Maybe Someday”, which was from her 2002 album For Broken Hearts Only.
In the legendary singer-actress’ return to ASAP in May of last year, we were truly thrilled to watch her perform a medley of her timeless hits with the best singers of this generation.
Fellow veteran singer-actress and real-life friend Zsa Zsa Padilla accompanied her in serenading us with the Joni Mitchell original “Both Sides Now”. She then had a duet of “Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko” with her “favorite” Moira Dela Torre, who also happened to record her own rendition of the song.
Meanwhile, Sharon wasn’t able to hide her delight as TNT Boys hopped onstage to perform her first chart-topping hit “Mr. DJ”.
She also couldn’t help herself from teasing her anak-anakan and Star Power champion Angeline Quinto as they did a duet of “Maging Sino Ka Man”. It was followed by her performance with fellow The Voice Philippines coach Sarah Geronimo of “To Love Again”, which was also the ending song of that number.
The collaboration of two OPM legends we’ve all been waiting for finally happened in October 2019 as the Megastar performed a medley of Patti Austin songs, namely, “All Behind Us Now”, “If I Believed”, and “In My Life” with the one and only Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid. The number was apparently a teaser of their upcoming joint concert then titled “ICONIC”.
And for her birthday fete last January, ASAP Natin ‘To surprised Sharon by letting some of her friends to join her in singing songs about friendship. After belting out Don McLean’s “Birthday Song” solo, she was obviously shocked and thrilled at the same time upon catching sight of her Bituing Walang Ningning co-star Cherrie Gil crooning Dionne Warwick’s “That’s What Friends Are For”.
Her “Magkapatid” co-star Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo and The Voice Philippines fellow coach Sarah Geronimo emerged onstage afterwards singing Dan Seals’ “One Friend”. Her quartet with fellow divas Zsa Zsa Padilla, Vina Morales, and Regine Velasquez-Alcasid in belting out “Count Of Me” of Cece Winans and Whitney Houston.
Veteran ASAP crooners Gary Valenciano, Ogie Alcasid, Piolo Pascual, and Martin Nievera also serenaded her with their version of Keno’s “A Friend”, which was also the final song for that number.
This coming Mother’s Day, let’s treat our beloved grandmas, moms, aunts, and other mother figures in our lives with a one-of-a-kind concert experience in the comforts of our homes by watching the Megastar’s “Sharon: Love and Music, A Mother’s Day Special” on May 10 at 8pm streamed live on ABS-CBN Entertainment’s official Facebook page, YouTube channel and website.
