Original Pilipino Music lost a renowned, legendary hitmaker on Sunday with the passing of April Boy Regino, 59.
April Boy propagated those soulful, soaring ballads that captivated the masses, especially at his career’s peak in the 1990s. We all remember April Boy as the one behind such OPM classics and videoke favorites as “Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin,”“Paano Ang Puso Ko” and “Umiiyak Ang Puso.”
He also was tapped to sing the theme song of Esperanza, which starred Judy Ann Santos, Wowie de Guzman, and the late Rico Yan, with his powerful voice resonating in everyone’s hearts.
He actually made one of his final public appearances last year on ASAP Natin ‘To, fulfilling the dream of a lucky fan for this unforgettable collaboration singing his biggest hits with other mainstays, led by Ogie Alcasid.
He also appeared on the ASAP stage a year earlier, just appreciating the duet of Popstar Royalty Sarah Geronimo and “vocal twin” JC Regino sing “Sana’y Laging Magkapiling.”
In that same appearance, April Boy would also have Angeline Quinto and Darren Espanto serenade him with their rendition of “Umiiyak Ang Puso.”
And in that same tribute to everyone’s OPM idol, April Boy would get to listen to Lloyd Umali and Noven Belleza belt out their stirring version of “Esperanza.”
Surely we are all grieving shall miss him toss those baseball caps and see his crowd of fans from all walks of life crossing their arms as they see him perform. Moreso, we will miss his incredible talent and pure genuineness that has captured our hearts since he began his phenomenal career in 1993.
Rest in peace, April Boy. Thank you for the wonderful music.
