Nikki Valdez finally experienced what it’s like to be directed by Coco Martin – and she discovered something impressive about his creative techniques.
Nikki sat with Kapamilya Chat to talk about “Labyu With An Accent” topbilled by Coco and Jodi Sta Maria, and where she plays Coco’s cousin Pearl. This isn’t her first time acting with Coco as she guest-starred in his previous teleserye “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” prior to his directorial debut.
Now, working with him as co-actor and director, Nikki was very much impressed by his spontaneity. He goes on set with an open mind and he listens to his sensations. “Not everybody has that, has the talent na kaya mong gawin ‘yun on the spot, na kapag may naisip ka isisingit mo siya para mas gumanda pa 'yung eksena,” she said of him.
Coco’s appeal might make him come off as a serious guy but the truth, according to Nikki, is that he’s naturally funny. “Komedyante pala siya, akala mo seryoso. And he’s just a happy person,” she enthused.
The film, which is an entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival 2022, reunites her on screen with good friend Jodi Sta Maria, whom she still has surprising discoveries with even after decades of friendship. “Si Jodi, napakatakaw,” she replied when asked for a fun fact about her co-actress. Considering Jodi’s slim figure, this would indeed fall under ‘revelations.’
Speaking of revelation, Nikki guaranteed that Jodi will deliver something new for moviegoers to enjoy. “May mga scene na parang ninerbiyos siyang gawin pero sabi namin, ‘gawin mo.’ Kasi hindi siya madali. Sabay ang comedy, sabay ang drama.” Everybody on set was supportive and trusting of her, knowing she’s one actress full of surprises.
Asked about her takeaways from the movie, Nikki pressed that “Labyu With An Accent” is more than just comedy. She guarantees there are heartwarming moments, too, and lessons about love and life that moviegoers will carry with them as they leave the cinemas.
