Female movie and teleserye characters have evolved over the years. Gone were the days when they’re just limited to staying behind the shadows of men like helpless damsels. To celebrate this empowering rise of heroines, here are four Kapamilya leading ladies worthy to be dubbed as action queens. Don’t be fooled by their feminine appeal!
From her entrance in the ‘biz as an adorable child star, Julia Montes has grown into a woman with jaw-dropping beauty and badass strength. She first displayed her natural flair for action via afternoon series Asintado where she portrayed as Ana, the personal nurse who sheds off her previous life in the name of revenge. Prior to the show, Julia took on firing and muay thai training. After a year-long hiatus, the Kapamilya actress gave viewers another wild ride via comeback series 24/7. Julia lived in the action-packed world of a security agent who takes a dangerous course towardsfinding a cure for her child falling ill due to a viral outbreak in the country.
A femme fatale has never been intensely wild until Maja Salvador breathed life to the iconic role of Lily Cruz aka Ivy Aguas in Wildflower. The epic series showed how versatile and badass Maja can get in doing action-packed scenes, all glammed-up and in high heels! That savage two-minute brawl in a covered parking lot went down in history as one of Maja’s most ‘astig’ onscreen moments. And fighting in heels has become quite a Maja thing! The Revenge Drama Queen continued to beat enemies in stilettos on her follow-up project, The Killer Bride. She stepped up by pulling off an extremely horrifying knife fight, this time, in a wedding dress. We just love how Maja’s action scenes are rhythmic and well-choreographed. Perhaps her background as a dancer helps, don’t you think?
Blessed with feisty feminine features and strong personality, Denise Laurel has a lot to offer as a female action star. She wowed us with her smooth yet biting moves as the black werewolves’ leader Soraya Laurent in that trending duel against Tony Labrusca’s Jake Arguelles in La Luna Sangre. She was also cast in FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano as Major Alessandra Romero. The hot momma shared action scenes with no less than King of Philippine TV Coco Martin and gave us major fighting skills.
Angel Locsin has many times proved that she reigns supreme in female-dominated action dramas. She did it first in Lobo, her earliest series as a Kapamilya. She kept fighting in its sequel, Imortal, which she had to undergo wushu and martial arts training for. Angel smashed enemies with bold confidence as the lady in red, Jacintha Magsaysay, in the third instalment, La Luna Sangre. In her recent teleserye, The General’s Daughter, the seasoned actress underwent physical and mental training with the Armed Forces of the Philippines for her role as 2nd Lt. Rhian Bonifacio. There was no stopping Angel from doing death-defying scenes including rappelling down a 15-floor building and hanging under a moving truck, without a stunt double. This angel on earth never ceases to amaze us!
These empowering actresses are definitely more than just pretty faces. What’s your favorite female-dominated action scene?
