The story behind Darren and Jayda’s “Sana Tayo Na,”and music-filled quarantine life

We can’t blame avid Darren Espanto and Jayda Avanzado shippers for believing that these two were destined to make beautiful music together. Their first official duet “Sana Tayo Na” proved their voices can create chemistry and a potential chart-topping hit when blended.

Sharing the history of this fresh musical collaboration, Jayda reveals her father Dingdong Avanzado wrote the song 27 years ago. Dingdong has always envisioned “Sana Tayo Na” as a duet yet he couldn’t seem to find the perfect pair. Until, over lunch at the Avanzado abode, the matriarch Jessa Zaragoza thought Jayda and Darren can own the song.

The light-bulb moment translated into a long process of negotiations. Jayda and Darren, after their management settled the deal, further discussed the project.

May pressure siyempre kasi si Tito Dingdong nga po yung gumawa ng kanta and I know how much this means to the Avanzado family, so I just really wanted to give justice sa kanta and just do my best sa part ko. I just like to thank them for trusting me,” Darren expressed.

Making the music video was complicated, either. Darren flew to Canada prior to the Luzon-wide lockdown. Therefore, the team had to deal with the challenges of virtual meetings, quarantine protocol, and different time zones.

Darren accomplished a list of shooting requirements with the help of his photographer cousin and the director’s virtual supervision. It was a DIY effort for Darren’s part. But even Jayda had her own share of adjustments.

The team inserted a montage of Jayda and Darren’s old photos to add more magic. With the hardwork they put into this collaboration, the singing duo is just happy that it’s finally up on YouTube. After all, their goal is simply to make their fans happy amid the pandemic. And if possible, as Darren says, give ‘torpe’ listeners the guts to confess.

These millennial stars surely know how to keep up with the changing times, however different it feels. Through the help of his team, Darren recently organized a fundraising digital birthday concert. Due to time differences, he had to set up his home studio at six in the morning, Canada time.

It was a new experience and he would admit that nothing beats the frenzy of a live concert. Nonetheless, he is just happy to connect with his fans even while he’s on the other side of the world. At the same time, he was able to step up by raising funds for the ABS-CBN Pantawid ng Pag-Ibig campaign. Darren shares that Jayda was there to support him as well.

The same setup goes for Darren’s hosting gigs for ASAP Natin ‘To and his other showbiz commitments. “I’m just thankful na ngayon siyempre lahat digital naman na po and you can do everything virtually. I even do corporate events for brands. Kailangan mo lang talaga ng green screen, WiFi, camera and all that, and you’re good to work.” Before ASAP Natin ‘To resumed with their studio tapings, Darren would film his production numbers at home and send the clips for editing.

Darren further details his life in Calgary. He says they almost went back to normal and they are now allowed to go on weekend road trips or camping. The curfew has been lifted, though wearing masks is still required when going out.

Meanwhile, Jayda makes the quarantine productive by writing songs, working out, and just bonding with the family. She learned to love ‘patis’ as well. Just like Darren, she’s busy doing online shows. Little by little, she’s getting used to working independently. Jayda also mentions that her duet with The Voice of the Philippines artist Jeremy Glinoga for her self-composed single ”Perfectly Imperfect” has reached one million streams.  Jayda wanted to just let other artists interpret the song but the management thought it would sound better when performed as a duet.

Love from Home

To give fans a sneak peak of celebrities’ day-to-day quarantine life, Star Magic thought of ditching the annual glam pictorials for something more raw and personal. This idea allowed artists to explore their creativity while keeping it real in a series of DIY home photoshoots.

Jayda wanted to paint her images with chill, laidback vibes. She went minimalist by wearing the classic white polo and jeans combo. The young artist went a little extra in the second photo where she could be seen fully dolled-up in a glamorous outfit while cooking in the kitchen. Who wouldn’t love a girl who could make household chores fun and elegant? The gorgeous Jayda pulled it off, with minimal help from her mom slash hairstylist. Sans the glam team, Jayda had fun experimenting with her makeup.

Sending love from his home in Canada, Darren created stunning entries with the help of his photographer cousin. He says the photos were too flawless that they seem weaved by a whole ensemble of creatives. It was a DIY family effort, though with his mom and sister taking on the roles of makeup artist, hairstylist, and production crew.

The Star Magic “Love from Home” digital catalogue aims to raise funds for hungry Filipino families affected by the pandemic, in partnership with the ABS-CBN Pantawid ng Pag-Ibig campaign.

Battle of the Egg Sandwich

Like most people stuck at home during this pandemic, Darren and Jayda try to sharpen their kitchen expertise by trying out different recipes. In this video, the singing duo shares their different takes on the popular Egg Sandwich meal.

Jayda goes classic using Japanese mayonnaise and boiled eggs as the main ingredients.

  1. Mash the boiled eggs.
  2. Add in your preferred mayonnaise.

Quick and yummy! This classic recipe is Jayda’s ultimate post-workout and midnight snack. Jayda mentions that she wants to further her cooking skills, so to survive without a helper. She wants to learn how to prepare the Pinoy favorite sinigang dish.

Darren is likewise getting better in wearing the chef’s hat. His recent cooking experiment, as posted on his social media account, is his own version of the Pinoy street food, taho. He adds that steak is his specialty.

Darren shares a proven hack in making a unique fried egg sandwich.

  1. Pour in the oil in a heated pan.
  2. Beat four eggs in a bowl.
