While we have seen a slew of female-fronted teleseryes in the past decades, we have only seen a few ones in the action genre that is topbilled by women since they are usually either placed in drama and romance projects or cast to be leading ladies.
But in the recent years, we’ve noticed the increase not just in action series both on television and digital platforms, but also in the actresses that are tapped to play as heroines or villainess. Indeed, gone are the days when the action genre is only dominated by men as these celebrity femme fatales are proof that women can fight and be action stars, too!
Just in time for the celebration of the International Women’s Day on March 8 and of the Women’s Month this whole March, we present to you via this Kapamilya Snaps feature the eight versatile actresses who truly astounded us with how they slay their action roles in teleseryes.
Jane de Leon
After playing supporting characters in the previous projects that she got cast in, Jane was given the wonderful opportunity to take on the highly coveted role of the legendary Pinay superheroine Darna in the action-packed teleserye Mars Ravelo’s Darna in 2022. It might have been short-lived, but we can all agree that she did an impressive job in portraying both Narda and Darna.
But prior to that big break, she’s was able to showcase her skills in doing fight scenes through her remarkable stints in the “Medal” episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya in 2020, wherein she depicted the life story of Pinay boxing champ Nesthy Petecio, and in FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, wherein she got to show off her fighting and gun-handling skills alongside hero Cardo Dalisay (Coco Martin) as Police Captain Lia Mante.
Janella Salvador
From charming us through her teeny bopper roles in the early projects that she did to fascinating us with her enigmatic character in The Killer Bride, Janella went on to astonish us when she accepted the role of Valentina for Mars Ravelo’s Darna. Aside from terrorizing us with her frightening appearance and her snake friends, she also stunned us with her unique way of toppling down enemies.
Dimples Romana
Just when we thought that we’ve already seen various facets of Dimples as an actress through the years that she’s been in showbiz, avid Kapamilya viewers were surely shocked when we saw her brandish guns and do fight scenes in The Iron Heart. Aside from taking firing lessons from her husband Boyet Ahmee who’s a gun enthusiast, she revealed in an Instagram post that she actually underwent Muay Thai training in preparation for her role as Selene Larisa.
Sofia Andres
Another young Kapamilya actress to delight us in continuously taking on challenging roles is Sofia. From being that adorable and supportive sister of Kathryn Bernardo in Princess and I (2012), she went on to become Erich Gonzales’ rival in La Vida Lena. But aside from her dramatic prowess, she’s also able to showcase her skills in doing fighting scenes through her roles in Bagani (2018) as the Sea Region warrior named Mayari and in ongoing series The Iron Heart as the lovelorn yet fierce Nyx del Rosario.
Sue Ramirez
She might have played characters that are palaban yet need some rescuing because they’re in distress, but Sue had the chance to be the heroine who can save other people through her role as Captain Lourdes Bacalso in A Soldier’s Heart (2020). There. She’s able to show that women have a place in the military and can even hold significant positions to protect the country.
Kathryn Bernardo
While there’s no doubt that she can slay in both drama and romance, Kathryn was able to show a new side of herself in La Luna Sangre (2017), wherein she played the role of Malia, the “Chosen One” who underwent intense trainings and overcame various challenges to defeat the king of vampires Supremo (Richard Gutierrez). Aside from her physical transformations, she also stunned us with her flair in doing fight scenes, which we had not seen before.
Julia Montes
In the two decades that she’s been in showbiz, Julia has already proven her versatility as an actress. As she’s able to take on mature roles at an early age, she also got the opportunity to explore various genres, such as action. She has already starred in a number of action-oriented series in the recent years, namely, Asintado (2018), 24/7 (2020), and FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano (2021). As a part of her preparations for these projects, she had to learn how to handle a gun, ride a motorcycle, and perform choreographed fight scenes.
Angel Locsin
Last, but definitely not the least, is Angel, who has also astounded us with her versatility as an actress. As we all know, she cannot only do the drama and comedy, but can also slay in action, as what we had seen in her portrayals as a fierce vampire in La Luna Sangre (2017) and a tough military nurse and spy in The General’s Daughter (2019).
As these Kapamilya stars indeed astound us with their teleserye portrayals as badass heroines and villainess, they also inspire us in real life as true champions of women empowerment.
