McCoy de Leon continues to show impressive acting performance as the annoying David in FPJ’s Batang Quiapo. And alongside his character’s intensifying story comes more hatred from the viewers. But this only shows how amazing he is. In fact, you’ll be surprised to see how friendly and humble, and how close he is to his co-stars off camera.

In this episode of Kapamilya React, McCoy shared interesting behind-the-scenes trivia about his portrayal in FPJ’s Batang Quiapo.

The first clip was all about David confronting Santino (Ronwaldo Martin) for idolizing their Kuya Tanggol (Coco Martin). His and Ronwaldo’s characters quarrel a lot on screen, so people will probably be shocked to see them get along in real life. “Kaya natatawa kami kapag gumagawa kami ng mga eksenang ganyan. Kasi sa totoong buhay, sobrang dikit kami. Lagi kami magkatabi sa tent,” shared McCoy, whose first goal was to deliver something new to the viewers. Thus, he injects sarcasm to make David different from the usual kontrabida.

On the next scene where he was beaten up by Coco, he said that he felt thankful to the actor-director for trusting him in such delicate sequences. He was inevitably hurt, but he also knows what he signed up for. “Masakit, eh! Pero hindi naman ‘yung bugbugan ang nasa isip ko kundi ‘yung makaeksena lang si Direk Coco. Habambuhay ko i-che-cherish.” He admires Coco for being generous in the sense that he provides actors equal opportunities so every character will have their shining moments.

Talking more of his co-stars, McCoy shared that John Estrada is also like a father to him off-camera. The more senior actor would impart tips and advice, which he takes to heart. Acting opposite Cherry Pie Picache and Charo Santos is any actor’s dream, and McCoy is glad to have been given the chance, though he admitted it’s challenging to act rude toward them. A contrast to the aloof David, McCoy is everyone’s friend on the set, which makes this series an even more remarkable facet of his career. “Sa totoo lang, kasundo ko lahat. Kaya kung sakali man, pero Direk huwag muna madale si David, malulungkot ako,” he added.

Watching David’s confrontation with Marites (Cherry Pie) as he revealed Camille (Yukii Takahashi)’s pregnancy brought McCoy to tears, though he thinks it wasn’t his best performance. “Nakulangan ako. Pangit pakinggan, pero para sa akin hindi talaga ako nakuntento. ‘Yung eksena na ‘yun, tuyong-tuyo na ‘yung mata ko. Tuyong-tuyo na lalamunan ko. Talon sa bangin talaga,” he flashbacked.

McCoy prepares for such big scenes by trusting his co-actors, the production, and himself. He believes that an actor’s preparation depends on factors like time constraints and sequences to be shot. Besides, too much preparation could make the performance look inorganic, “de numero” as he puts it.

Most scenes in FPJ’s Batang Quiapo are spontaneous, but some are mounted with a detailed script like the scene of David acting rude to a customer and his boss at a coffee shop. McCoy revealed that even he was annoyed by David’s behavior in that scene, “No’ng nabasa ko ‘yan, kahit ako napamura.” He further shared that this scene has an uncut version.

While playing ‘kontrabida’ is quite a new territory for McCoy, he enjoys the process. “Ang sarap sa feeling kasi hindi ka limitado.” For him, antagonistic roles come with more creative freedom.

Through FPJ’s Batang Quiapo, McCoy learned that an actor’s job goes beyond just uttering dialogues and showing up in front of the cameras. An actor, he said, must completely bring a character to life. “’Yung wardrobe, damit ang trabaho nila. ‘Yung direktor, nagdidirek. ‘Yung audio, trabaho nila sa boses. So, ano ang trabaho ng artista? Ikaw ang magbibigay ng kulay sa isang karakter,” he imparted.

To cap it off, McCoy invited everyone to watch FPJ’s Batang Quiapo, weeknights, on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live, TV5, and A2Z.
