If you’ve been feeling old and nostalgic lately, Joross Gamboa and Roxanne Guinoo will add more warm fuzzy feelings to your day. In this edition of Kapamilya React, the former loveteam, now good friends, look back on their earliest small screen appearances.
Star Circle Quest (2004)
In or out? The pair made it to the cut of reality-based talent search Star Circle Quest Top 10 and as the competition went on, everyone noticed the spark that made them one of their generation’s hottest love teams.
They did not intend to join showbiz but, as they say, everything that’s meant for you will come to you. In her case, it was all her sister’s idea. They went to a mall in Bicutan to audition at the last minute and she was the last person to make it to the cut-off. Call it kismet!
“Noong dumating ako dun talagang hindi prepared. Lahat. Mula nung tinawag ako ng kapatid ko, last ten na lang tapos ako pa ‘yung pang-number 10,” she recalled.
Joross wanted to become a model than an actor, clueless that he would learn to love the job he used to call ‘baduy.’ “Ang mentality ko noon, parang ‘pag artista, baduy, umiiyak sa TV kalalaking tao. Tapos ang tatanda na, nagpapa-tweetums pa. Ang gusto ko nu’n maging model. Kasi ‘pag model, sosyal tingnan. Tapos kinain ko lahat ng sinabi ko,” he admitted, adding that “kapal ng mukha” was his only weapon.
SCQ was a big part of their teenage years. They have lots of memories to share – from the nerve-wracking announcements to happy off-cam moments in the dressing room.
“’Yung tension na nafe-feel namin kapag tinawag ka tapos ‘yung heartbeat. ‘Yan ‘yung time na natutulog kami sa dressing room tapos kalat-kalat. Minsan sa sahig, si Sandara laging nasa loob ng cabinet, may isa nasa upuan, isa nasa ibabaw ng vanity mirror. Kanya-kanyang pwesto. Grabe ‘yung memories,” Roxanne shared.
Gulong ng Palad (2006)
Their love team was introduced in the modern remake of Gulong ng Palad where they joined an ensemble of all-star cast led by Kristine Hermosa and TJ Trinidad. It follows the story of a poor daughter whose only ambition is to raise her family from poverty. But falling in love with a wealthy guy would change the course of her life and their clashing social status becomes their love’s greatest challenge.
In this teleserye, Joross played Totoy and Roxanne as the boyish Jojo. It can’t be denied that their fresh, youthful team-up added more pizzazz to the series despite the typical struggles of newcomers.
“Noong time namin, parang nangangapa ka pa. Hindi mo pa alam kung ano ‘yung mga blocking, ano ‘yung gusto ng mga director mo. Lahat ‘yun itatanong mo, pakikinggan mo lahat,” she said. The job would get easier as they mature and collect real-life experiences that help them add depth to their portrayals.
Joross added, “The greatest teacher in life is experience and doon sa mga pinagdaanan namin, on and off-cam, naa-apply na namin ‘yun sa mga eksena namin. Sa akin, siyempre nag-iimprove din at mas nagiging mature na ang pag-arte namin.”
Quizon Avenue (2007)
A perfect blend of shy girl and funny guy, JoRox was often pegged into light, comedic roles. They even shared rib-tickling skits with the late Comedy King Dolphy in a sitcom, and it’s one for the books.
“Si Tito Dolphy ang idol ng mga idols natin, so talagang nakakatuwa na nakatrabaho at nakaeksena pa natin,” expressed Roxanne. She added that drama requires building emotions while comedy asks for perfect timing.
Joross said he’s eager to explore all genres but comedy will remain his comfort zone. “Ako, mapa-action o drama, gusto ko gawin lahat. Pero katulad ng sabi ni Rox, medyo nakaka-drain kasi ‘yun, eh, lalo na pag series… Iba ‘pag light, eh. Tsaka ang sarap di ba ‘pag nagtatawanan lang, hindi mo masyadong ramdam yung trabaho kapag comedy.”
MMK “Under One Roof” (2018)
Filed under heavy drama is an episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya where Joross played a transgender woman, Sachi, who falls in love with Rex (Polo Ravales) unaware that the guy is still in a relationship with his girlfriend, Fats, played by Roxanne. The conflict heightens when Rex fails to choose between his two lovers and gets the other one pregnant. Blinded by love, Sachi decided to live with the couple, hence the title.
Joross thought of the physical challenges of essaying gay characters. “Ang hirap ng gay role! Ang hirap mag-wig, heels, maglagay ng kutsinta sa dibdib,” he said.
As they grow from newbies to versatile artists, Joross and Roxanne also learned to play as a team. “Mas walang awkward moments kasi gamay na namin ‘yung isa’t isa, sanay na kami sa isa’t isa. Pwede na naming tanungin ang isa’t isa, ‘Paano kaya to?’ kasi may teamwork na na-build sa friendship namin, so magaan, mas madali,” Roxanne mused.
