It’s been twelve years since Bugoy Carino entered showbiz. He was six, so cute and little but a dance floor giant ever since. He also didn’t have to wait that long for his first lead teleserye role. In this edition of Kapamilya React, the former child star enjoys watching clips from his past TV projects, musing on how much he’s grown over the years.
Bugoy is a product of the kiddie reality talent show Star Circle Quest for the Next Kiddie Idol (SCQ). With his talent and passion for dancing, Bugoy loved joining contests so they decided to also give SCQ a try. He arrived at the audition late, coming straight from another competition. But, as they say, life will know how to give anything that’s meant to be yours.
Bugoy recalled, “Bawal na mag-audition, last na kasi gabing-gabi na. Galing po kasi akong dance contest no’n. Tapos pagdating ko doon, last na buti pinapasok pa ako ng guard tapos nakuha pa ako at nag-champion pa ako. Nice one!”
The 6-year-old Bugoy impressed with his dance moves, particularly the head spin. Their batch includes Xyriel Manabat and Izzy Canillo, two of the strongest contenders who are also set to become child wonders, thus he didn’t expect to win. But he did.
Talking about his unforgettable moments on the show, he said he was starstruck with hosts Ruffa Gutierrez and Ai-Ai delas Alas.
Goin’ Bulilit (2009-2016)
He earned a spot in the kiddie gag show Goin’ Bulilit considered as a training ground for the industry’s child wonders. As a ‘bulilit’ mainstay, he got the chance to hone his talents, work with popular celebrities who would guest on the show, and play exciting grown-up roles.
One of his most memorable experiences was playing gay in the fun “Sinetch Itey” segment. While veteran actors would attest to the challenges of cross-dressing, Bugoy and the ‘bulilits’ made gay roles appear easy to portray. They would even finish the whole segment in a single take. They do it for the prize! “May challenge, kapag naka-one take, manlilibre ‘yong direktor namin kaya isang buong Sinetch Itey wina-one take namin.”
Bugoy added that he and Sinetch Itey co-hosts Clarence Delgado and Izzy Canillo are grateful for being part of the iconic segment, “Kaming tatlo nina Izzy at Clarence, sobrang thankful kami na ginanampanan namin ‘yon kasi ‘yong Sinetch Itey sa Goin’ Bulilit, sobrang legendary niya, as in kilalang-kilala siya.”
In 2012, Bugoy bagged his first lead role on primetime. He played the titular character in E-Boy, a values-oriented series about a child robot who learns the complexities of human life.
Bugoy mentioned that he was nervous playing lead for the first time. He was used to just playing supporting characters and doing heavy drama via single episodes of Maalaala Mo Kaya. He said he’ll always be grateful for this opportunity, “Dito ako pinaka-thankful kasi nabigyan ng chance na maging bida sa teleserye na ‘to. Ginawa ko talaga ‘yong best ko sa pag-arte ko.”
His performance in E-Boy brought him more popularity and projects. Viewers also knew him as the child star with impressive crying skills. Although, he thinks he’s not that good anymore, “Dati, nakilala po ako sa pag-iyak ko, eh. Pero ngayon parang hindi ko na po kaya, eh. Kung papipiliin po ako, mas gusto ko action-comedy, may kaunting drama pero sakto lang.”
MMK “Tsinelas” (2011)
Bugoy showcased his acting chops in the drama anthology MMK several times. He left everyone in awe with his performance as Dagul in the “Tsinelas” episode. It tells the story of orphaned brothers Dagul and Edgar (AJ Perez) who travelled from Quezon City to their hometown in Catbalogan, Samar by foot.
Since they didn’t have money for fare and food, the brothers had to scavenge for scraps en route to Samar. According to Bugoy, they had to actually make a series of stop-overs and film in dumpsites. It was so challenging since he was only 8 years old then. And the experience apart from the storyline and the final output makes this his most favorite MMK guesting.
“Ito ‘yung pinaka-favorite ‘tsaka memorable na MMK ko, sa lahat ng ginawa ko. One week ‘ata kami nagte-taping nito tapos bumiyahe kami pa-Quezon, so nagsa-stop over kami tapos nagsho-shoot kami, nagte-taping sa daan, sa SLEX. Tapos meron pang biglaan kunwari magbabasura talaga kami,” he shared.
