Months after inking a fresh record deal with ABS-CBN Star Music last December 2019 and the release of her latest single “I Can’t Give Anymore,” veteran singer Lani Misalucha graced Entertainment.ABS-CBN.com’s Kapamilya Chat via Zoom on Friday afternoon, June 5, to talk about and give the viewers a snippet of it.
The fun and insightful conversation commenced with the Asia’s Nightingale relating how she and her husband have been doing throughout the whole community quarantine. According to her, they only went out a number of times to do some essential errands and she’s been keeping herself occupied by participating in online fundraising events, recording videos of her singing that were sent to digital music shows, cleaning the abode where they currently stay, researching random stuff online, and just like most of us – sleeping, eating, and watching Korean dramas.
She also revealed rediscovering her skills in cooking, which she missed doing since she didn’t had the time when they were still in Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as in drawing and painting, which she used to be fond of doing in her younger years.
When asked if she’s already prepared for the “new normal”, Lani implied that the previous months had given her the ample time to adapt with the current lifestyle that involves observing proper hygiene and other safety measures. As for keeping ourselves productive, she’s apparently delighted with how many of us have uncovered things that we thought we couldn’t do by ourselves, such as by cooking and fixing stuff at home.
Moving on to the discussion of her latest single, the 50-year-old power belter enthusiastically divulged that it’s written by three seasoned musicians, two of which are Filipino-American while the other one is a Korean-American – and was recorded in Los Angeles, California.
The song exudes the emotions of someone who keeps on investing on or compromising for the relationship he/she is in but gets unreciprocated. As for the inspiration behind its heart-rending lyrics, she shared that the lyricist told her that it wasn’t based on his own experience nor he went through heartaches in the past.
“When he’s starting to compose lyrics, iniisip niya ‘yong kakanta at saka nilalagay niya ‘yong sarili niya doon sa sitwasyon ng song. Kaya, ‘ayan, naging magical yaong song na ‘yan na “I Can’t Give Anymore,” she said.
Furthermore, the host asked her if there was one point in her life that she had uttered “I Can’t Give Anymore”, to which she responded by narrating her inspiring experience while working as a performer in one of the prime casinos in Las Vegas.
“Akala ko, ‘di ko kakayanin. ‘Yong time na nag-migrate na kami sa US and then nag-start na nga ako ng show do’n sa Las Vegas, parang feeling ko, ‘maa-accept ba ako?’ Because you know, lahat kami ng performers, ‘yong Society of Seven at saka ako, Asians kami e and then nagpe-perform kami sa isang major casino,” she imparted, saying that having tourists from different nationalities as audiences made her feel overwhelmed.
Then she added, “There was one time na nagpe-perform kami in a small crowd, medyo upscale ‘yong lugar and para siyang lounge e, tapos lahat ng nando’n we’re all Caucasians. Tapos perform kami, first song, second song, parang nobody seems to listen kasi everyone was having a drink, nagcha-chat sila. Alam mo ‘yong pakiramdam na nangliliit ka dahil parang walang gustong making sa’yo?”
But that experience made her realize that she should remain strong and focused on what she’s doing and on her goal.
“Pero alam mo pala, dapat ‘di mo sasambitin ‘yang word na ‘I give up’ or ‘I cannot give anymore’ kasi you will be on the losing end kapag nag-give up ka na or nag-stop ka. Kailangan lang talagang, ‘sige, banat lang’. Banat lang.”
As she also does impressions of famous divas in her shows abroad, we also asked her to take on the “Impersonation Challenge”, which she willingly accepted and unbelievably nailed. She indeed impressed us with how she’s able to copy the voices of Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Shakira, Jaya, Sharon Cuneta, and even Elmo of Sesame Street!
The singer then let us hear her live performance of “I Can’t Give Anymore” live, as well as of her another single released internationally titled “Meteorite”, which, unlike the former, is a lovesong about getting significantly smitten by someone.
Lani capped off the interview by expressing her gratitude to her supporters and to those who already streamed and downloaded her latest single “I Can’t Give Anymore” and by reminding everyone to always stay safe and pray.
