How Bea and John Lloyd’s undeniable, timeless onscreen chemistry started in Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay

Aren’t all of we just gushing in kilig whenever we see Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz on screen? Whether it is through their blockbuster movies, top rating teleseryes or one recent surprise script reading in Makati City, nothing compares to their undeniable, timeless and delightful chemistry we all fall for.

Now, this immense thrill has crossed over to digital, especially when people are staying at their homes doing whatever they can to keep them entertained—from binge-watching movies to making zany Tiktok videos.

Bea just finished demonstrating how she whipped up bagoong rice for frontliners as part of relief operations of her I Am Hope Organization, and asked who can she chat with on her Instagram Live feed. After moments of waiting, someone suddenly joined her- John Lloyd, leaving viewers in utter shock and immense thrill seeing them together in an online video chat on Monday, April 27.

And while they discussed their closeness as friends, John Lloyd’s beloved son Elias, the dangerous world we exist in, his take on helping frontliners and the needy during the pandemic, especially the government’s role in such efforts, and even their previous projects, Bea reminded John Lloyd of one particular drama:

After their “discussion” on the pandemic, the conversation went:

John Lloyd: “Anong gusto mo? Magkaibigan.”

Bea: “Magkaibigan.”

John Lloyd: “Anong gusto mo, magkaibigan o mag…?”

Bea: “Grabe, magkaibigan, 13 years old pa lang ako, Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay. Sh*t, grabe.

John Lloyd: “Thirteen ka pa lang naghihintay ka na? Talaga?”

Bea: “T**ga! Soap natin, ‘Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay.’ Feeling!”

Indeed Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay was the teleserye that started it all—their onscreen compatibility, emphatic following, and their dazzling run as one of the most successful showbiz pairs on TV and film. John Lloyd played Yuri, who is actually Andre, the long lost son Lorna Tolentino’s character Lorrea. He would fall in love with Bea’s character Katrina in the story.

“It was very hard because I was only in second year high school. ‘Yung role ko 21-year-old law student,” Bea, who was 14 years old at the time, revealed. From merely adjusting her voice to showing she was an expert in legalese made even her portrayal more complicated and difficult for a teenage newcomer.

Bea revealed in this video how she found it difficult playing the role of “nerdy” innocent girl who would grow up to become a successful lawyer. “Before every scene, halimbawa a court scene, kailangan talaga papaliwanag sa akin ni Direk Lauren (Dyogi) line per line kung ano ang sasabihin ko. Ang hirap sa akin, unang una ang diction, ‘yung believability, ‘yung confidence. Alam mo ‘yung bearing ng isang woman. I was just a girl. I was 14.”

While it was a mere side tale to the main plot, their tandem would become well-remembered and carried in future immensely successful projects. These include their launching teleserye It Might Be You, Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin, Maging Sino Ka Man, A Beautiful Affair, and the top grossing films “One More Chance,” and its sequel “A Second Chance,” “My First Romance,” “Now That I Have Found You,” “Close To You,” “The Mistress,” and “Miss You Like Crazy.”

While John Lloyd and Bea have had numerous other partners and paired with other actors throughout their careers, no one can move on from their irresistible twosome that continue to captivate their ever loyal fans whenever, wherever.

Their co-star in Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay, “One More Chance,” and “A Second Chance,” Dimples Romana, even left a comment during the Instagram Live session:  ““Hoy Basha at Popoy, anong iniisip n’yo? Bakit ganyan kayo? Nananahimik ang mga puso namin!”

Here are some unforgettable scenes from Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay that will make us reminisce their electrifying bond even at the get-go.
