Sheryn Regis on Hotspot

Ten years after shying away from the local entertainment scene to pursue a teaching career in the United States, “Crystal Voice of Asia” Sheryn Regis is back in the Philippines for good to continue singing for her Filipino fans all over the world -- which she truly missed.

And this year, she’s not only marking her return with the release of her two new songs, but with a digital concert, too! She talked about it in her recent guesting in the ABS-CBN Entertainment online show Hotspot, which she commenced by immediately breaking our hearts with her performance of her latest single “Gusto Ko Nang Bumitaw”.

As host DJ Jhai Ho welcomed her and everyone to the episode, they immediately discussed what the song is all about. The 41-year-old actress implied that it talks about a toxic relationship, wherein the couple has already lost respect and love to one another and the depression and anxiety it inflicts to the persons involved. At the same time, it also discusses letting go of the people or situation you’re accustomed with, not dwelling on the negativities that surround you, and learning to stand for yourself.

When asked if she’s ever uttered “Gusto Ko Nang Bumitaw”, Sheryn disclosed that she’s the type who usually suppresses her emotions and is even-tempered, making it possible for her to endure any difficulty she could encounter in any relationship that she would be in.

Aside from it’s two of her first original songs after 10 years of absence from the Philippines, the said track holds a special place in her heart since she’s the one who wrote it. She related that it was initially written in English, and it was her manager Michiko Unso and ABS-CBN Music creative director Jonathan Manalo who helped her translate it in Tagalog.

She then turned emotional as she recalled the darkest time in her life and how she coped up from it. Apart from writing songs and singing, she confessed locking herself up in her room and taking sleeping pills. Although she tried her best to be hopeful, she admitted that there were instances when wished to not wake up anymore because of the negativities that bombarded her.

“Sa lahat ng mga nakaka-relate dito, you are not alone. You are not alone. Marami tayo. We have to stand for ourselves, huwag tayong padadaig sa mga negativity kasi we have ourselves, we have God. Pray ka lang. I consoled myself with prayers a lot. Tahimik ako tapos ine-express ko lahat sa kanta ko, sa musika ko. Ang importante sa’kin kasi is I still have faith in God kahit na kinukwestiyon ng ibang tao,” she expressed, pertaining to those people who have gone through the same plight as hers.

With regards to the most challenging rumor she has encountered ever since her remarkable Star In A Million stint, Sheryn revealed that it would be the allegations of her constantly competing with her co-artists. But instead of paying attention to those, she just chose to “dust it off” and “let go of it”, as well as to keep silent, to avoid toxicity and be able to focus on more important matters.

Being one of the brightest musicians of her generation, it was inevitable for her to be compared with other singers, especially the younger ones. While she used to get hurt by the comparisons, she confessed that it no longer affects her anymore.

Despite it being a heart-rending ballad, “Gusto Ko Nang Bumitaw” has become a trending challenge in TikTok, wherein users upload their unique renditions of it. While the video of two lizards holding on to one another with it as the background song amused her the most, she appreciates the song covers.

Sheryn also talked about working with actor Vin Abrenica, who’s her leading man in the song’s music video, as well as how she prepared for it physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Apart from her latest single, she’s on the show to promote her upcoming digital concert titled “Love United” that will be held on October 23, too. Joining her will be controversial rapper Ez Mil and his manager H-Bom; Tawag ng Tanghalan alumni Froilan Canlas, Janine Berdin, and TNT Boys; and up-and-coming young singer Kaela Francheska.

As her fans are surely looking forward to it, she admitted that she was initially hesitant to push through with it. She stated, “Kasi dito din naman ako naka-focus talaga ako kung bakit nandito ako sa Pilipinas because there’s always a choice for me going back to the US and do something else na mas mapayapa ang buhay. But I’m here, doing this thing here. Ito kasi ‘yong  purpose ko talaga kung bakit nandito ako ngayon. So, I’m just glad na I still have faith, naniniwala pa rin ako that God is always there to really provide me the wisdom and strength to really focus.” She also expressed her gratitude to ABS-CBN and Mak Entertainment Services for their all-out support and unwavering trust to her in putting up this much-awaited event.

Sheryn also gave a sample of her hit songs “Follow Your Dream”, which she considers as the song that best describes her life at present, and “Sabihin Mo Sa Akin”, the theme song of the 2005 series Kampanerang Kuba, as requested by DJ Jhai Ho.
