OPM icon singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid guested on Hotspot with DJ Jhai Ho last Tuesday, February 16, and shared the story behind the novelty track “Maga Ako, Manas Ako” sung by his comical alter persona, Eydie Waw and the Wawettes.
Appearing as Eydie Waw on Hotspot, he walked the viewers through the whole process of conceptualization for this new single. A certain “Mrs. Nubla,” he said, discovered Eydie Waw while singing at a videoke in a mall and liked his “dashing” looks. The fun song he said was borne out of his voracious appetite during the pandemic that made him take hearty meals even at midnight, thus having that bloated face and figure. Eydie added that ever since he was a kid he always enjoyed singing, and wanted to be like his “idol,” OPM icon Ogie Alcasid.
Eydie then taught DJ Jhai Ho the song’s dance steps, which, he added, have now become the viral #EydieWawChallenge on TikTok that many netizens are taking on. He said kids and their moms are dancing to it, which is even part of their daily Zumba sessions.
In the Jojowain o Totropahin Challenge, Eydie was first shown an image of Arci Muñoz. Eydie said that he would only befriend her because of her funny personality. Jessy Mendiola and Kim Chiu next appeared onscreen and Eydie said he chose “totropahin” for both because, first, Jessy is going to get married soon with Luis Manzano, and Kim, he said, is a very cute and sweet girl who has supported “Maga Ako, Manas Ako” by also taking on the #EydieWawChallenge. Eydie would then “friendzone” Maja Salvador, Angelica Panganiban, and Ivana Alawi because, he stressed, Maja is way younger than him, Angelica can be a funny friend, and because Ivana is good at washing clothes and cleaning cars, she can also help him with his household chores. When DJ Jhai Ho finally showed the photo of Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid, Eydie said, “Naku ang ganda ng babaeng ‘yan. Pinakamaganda talaga ang Songbird na ‘yan. Siguro ‘yan, jojowain ko na ‘yan.”
