Hotspot: Juris, Janine Berdin, Sam Mangubat thankful, overwhelmed as Himig 11th edition interpreters

First-rate OPM performers Juris, Janine Berdin, and Sam Mangubat appeared on Hotspot with DJ Jhai Ho to share their thoughts on being chosen as interpreters for ABS-CBN Star Music’s annual songwriting competition, Himig 11th Edition (formerly Himig Handog) as they offered viewers a sneak peek of their entries.

In this fun virtual interview, Juris said she is grateful to appear again in the songwriting contest.  Her upcoming performance of “Ika’y Babalik Pa Ba” by Jabez Orara marks the fourth time she has participated in the Himig competition as an interpreter. She is hopeful that listeners will appreciate all the Himig songs, assuring that they will surely relate to those tunes.

Being a Himig veteran, Juris was asked if she gave any inputs in her collaboration with the composer. Juris said that before the song was even presented to her, the songwriting work had already been completed.  It is important, she said, for the interpreter like her to understand the song deeply so that he or she could impart the emotions or message of the song effectively. “Ika’y Babalik Pa Ba,” she added, was inspired by the songwriter’s complicated love experience.

Tawag Ng Tanghalan Season 2 grand winner Janine Berdin, on the other hand, said she was overwhelmed and excited to perform Joanna Ang’s “Bulalakaw”, the first Visayan song in the songwriting contest’s history. Janine shared that the biggest challenge interpreting the song was to accurately convey the song’s message, especially to non-Visayan speakers.

Meanwhile, Janine’s fellow TNT artist Sam Mangubat, who emerged as the Second Placer in the Season 1 Grand Finals, is also set to join the competition as the interpreter of Daryl Cielo’s “Kulang Ang Mundo”. Sam disclosed in the online show that the song is about how powerful love can be—a tune he instantly fell in love with after just hearing its first few lines and melody.

Juris, Janine, and Sam all sang lines from their respective competition entries and invited viewers to share, stream, watch, and vote for their songs.
