Francine Diaz, Francis Magundayao, Noel Comia Jr share challenges in filming Tenement 66

As their highly anticipated film Tenement 66” is set to stream worldwide beginning July 23 on iWantTFC, KTX.ph, and TFC IPTV, lead stars Francine Diaz, Francis Magundayao, and Noel Comia Jr graced the latest episode of Hotspot to talk about it, as well as amuse us with the bond they’re able to establish while filming it.

And since it’s been raining host DJ Jhai Ho commenced their chikahan by asking their go-to rainy day comfort food. Francine volunteered to go first and shared that it’s champorado with milk, which she usually pairs with bread. It’s also Noel’s first pick, but he just changed it to Loming Batangas, while Francis said that it’s the Pinoy fave taho for him.

Prior to its much-awaited premiere in the Philippines and around the world, “Tenement 66”  already gained recognition abroad as it was chosen to be the official entry of the Philippines at the 25th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) in South Korea under the Bucheon Choice Category, which ran from July 8 to 18. Thus, the three young thespians have nothing but gratitude and pride for this amazing feat.

“Sobrang saya ko po. Sobrang unexpected po kasi ng lahat ng ito. And knowing po na pinalabas po siya sa South Korea, sa Bucheon, and nakita po siya ng mga taong hindi Pilipino, na gusto lang nila makakita ng magandang movie, it’s such a great feeling sa amin. If I could say one word, I would say I feel ecstatic because I am joyful,” Noel expressed.

Meanwhile, Francis shared how “it’s still very, very “surreal” for him. “Parang ‘di siya totoo pero kailangan mong tanggapin na totoo kasi Filipino stories are very, very real; situations in the Philippines are very, very real – and ‘yon ang pelikula namin, ‘yon ang “Tenement 66”. Naka-set talaga siya sa Pilipinas with original Filipino characters, with original Filipino stories. So parang kami ‘yong instrument to show the stories to other cultures, it’s the best feeling in the world. One of the greatest honors na na-experience naming ‘yon.”

While Francine feels the same way as them, she disclosed feeling nervous and excited at the same time on what the Pinoy audiences will comment on it. Yet, amazement still overpowers her.

Moving on to the premise of the movie, they divulged that this crime-thriller follows the stories of three youngsters Teban, Ron-Ron, and Lea whose lives intertwined because of the perilous situation they put themselves in.

With regards to the traits of their respective characters that they admire the most, Francine said that it is Lea’s determination and fearlessness to attain her goals. For Francis, it’s the tenacity of Teban to do things that used to put him in trouble that reflects the typical attribute of the youth. While for Noel, it is Ron-Ron’s being a family guy, who will do everything for his family even though it’s his safety that’s at stake.

DJ Jhai Ho asked the three actors to describe “Tenement 66” Francine said that it’s “magnifico” (or magnificent), it’s “riveting” for Noel, while Francis commented that it’s chilling and goosebumps-inducing.

When it comes to the challenges they encountered, Francis disclosed that it would be his character’s performance in the finale of the film. For Noel, he recalled the moments when he was asked to not move nor speak, as well as being required to act as if he has asthma attacks (although he actually has in real life). While for Francine, viewers should watch out for the last scene as she never imagined that it could happen in real life.

What made it extra difficult, according to Francis, were the other factors that indeed took a toll in momentum of their filming, such as the weather, logistics, and availability of other actors. There was also a time when their director Rae Red decided to reshoot one scene in order to make it more compelling.

After inviting everyone to watch “Tenement 66” they proceeded on playing the “Alphabet Challenge”, wherein they had to supply an answer that starts in letters A to Z in each category that DJ Jhai Ho had given them. Whoever failed to give an answer had to respond to the “fearless questions” of the other players. The categories were color, country, local celebrity, and places in the Philippines.
