4 Pinay Miss Universe titleholders share stories behind crowning moments

In the past 68 years of Miss Universe, four out of the 63 representatives had successfully hoisted the Philippine flag in the highly prestigious beauty pageant after taking home the most coveted crown in their respective competitions.

Thus, in this episode of Stellar’s QUEENDOM series dubbed “Crowning Glory”, we’re going to reminisce the winning moments of those four remarkable and celebrated Pinays as we compiled clips of their interviews from various ABS-CBN shows in this montage.

Of course, first off is our first-ever Miss Universe winner Gloria Diaz who snagged the crown in the 1969 competition, at the same time that astronauts first landed on the moon. As she’s able to charm the judges not only with her beauty at 18 years old, but with her wit as well in answering to the question related to the latter event. As she later on became part of the pageant’s panel in the previous years, she told showbiz reporter Mario Dumaual in an exclusive interview that it’s not only the wisdom of the contestant she’s focused on, but on how she projects herself most importantly.

Four years after, another Filipina fascinated the universe with her bewitching deific beauty and simple yet sensible response in the question and answer portion – Margie Moran. Not only that her splendour comparable to the goddesses of Olympus was awarded the Miss Photogenic, but her impressive wit made her worthy of being hailed the Miss Universe 1973 as well. She also clarified in one of her interviews the story behind her winning moment after clips of it went viral in the recent years as she got caught seemingly peeking at the emcees cue card and knowing that she’s the winner.

And after our 42-year Miss Universe victory drought, Pia Wurtzbach once again blessed the country with another crown in 2015. Aside from this historical feat, another reason that made it extra controversially was with how host Steve Harvey wrongfully proclaimed Miss Colombia as the winner instead of her. Pia disclosed in an interview what was happening during that moment and how Steve humbly apologized for what had happened. In her conversation with the King of Talk in The Bottomline With Boy Abunda, she revealed that although she didn’t expect that the question on why she’s should be the hailed the Miss Universe that year would be asked to her, she actually rehearsed her answer for that without exactly memorizing it.

Just three years after Pia’s triumph, another Pinay queen dominated the competition in 2018 – Catriona Gray. As she failed to bring home the bacon when she represented the country at Miss World 2016, this arguably intensified her enthusiasm to win the Miss Universe title for she amazed everyone with how she prepared and brought the country to the competition through the attires and costume she wore all throughout. In her fun chat with Vice Ganda during her homecoming party, she sincerely related how she felt being tagged as the “Best Miss Universe Ever”.
