The classic horror film "Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara" first scared Filipinos when it was shown on the big screen in 1974, with Susan Roces in the title role. In 1995, noted film director Chito Roño did a remake of the film and included Lorna Tolentino and Dawn Zulueta in his stellar cast.
In 2008, Kris Aquino was introduced as Barbara, the woman who is tormented by an evil doll named Chelsea. This innocent-looking doll is always carried around by her niece Karen (played by Celine Lim). What they don't know is that the doll is possessed by the soul of Barbara's dead, jealous sister Ruth (played by Jodi Sta. Maria).
Ms. Susan played the role of Amanda, the matriarch of the household and mother of Ruth. The Queen of Philippine Movies is the stepmother of Barbara, a character that was not in the original movie version. Even though Barbara is her stepdaughter, Amanda loves her as if she were her own. Barbara is a nurse who comes home to the Philippines upon learning about the suicide of her half-sister Ruth.
This was the first installment of ABS-CBN Sineserye Presents: The Susan Roces Cinema Collection and was directed by Gilbert Perez and Jerry Lopez-Sineneng.
The ABS-CBN primetime horror series debuted on Philippine television with a rating of 26.7 percent on January 7, 2008.
