With his re-appearance on Maalaala Mo Kaya this Saturday, December 9, in a tale of unconditional love portraying a young man risking his life to donate a kidney to an ailing girlfriend, Hero Angeles has definitely arrived once more as a premiere actor poised for validation and recognition.
He was actually one of the biggest heartthrobs in the mid-2000s.
Hero rose to stardom as the first Grand Questor in the Star Circle Quest Season 1 in 2004 and was paired with fellow Questor now Korean pop superstar Sandara Park. He was one of the most in-demand teen actors at that time, starring in the TV shows Krystala and Nginiiig and movies Bcuz of U and Can This Be Love sharing lead credits with Sandara.
Natural charm and charisma
Fans raved about his natural charm and charisma akin to Meteor Garden’s Vic Zhou, which was further accentuated with his pairing with Sandara, a pristine Korean beauty, making them a seeming hit Asianovela tandem.
Several controversies, however, led to his sudden exit from the limelight and cut short his fledging superstardom.
In his guesting in Magandang Buhay, Hero expressed remorse and regret with his career misfortunes, but this he said gave him a deluge of life lessons. This also led him back to his first love – painting.
Hero, the artist
From drawing simple doodles when he was still a child, Hero honed his skills as a visual artist when he studied Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines in Diliman.
Hero the artist further explored widening his craft, from expressionist paintings to molding miniature animal paintings and food sculptures using polymer clay. He would then open an art gallery ARTCETERO to display and sell his works, a portion of which goes to charity and causes he supports.
Hero, the filmmaker
In a few years, a wiser and more mature Hero would start his measured return to the entertainment scene, not as an actor but as a filmmaker.
He produced and directed the indie film Stockroom, which garnered acclaim locally and internationally. It was chosen as an entry the 2007 CINEMALAYA Independent Film Festival and the only Filipino production to be featured in the Revenge of the Blood Filmfest in Valletta, Malta the same year.
In 2015, Hero was welcomed back to the Kapamilya network starting with guestings and supporting roles in such shows as Nathaniel and Ipaglaban Mo!.
Hero, the comebacking actor
He would then notch his biggest comeback role in May this year, playing the lead role of a transgender mom in the MMK Mother’s Day episode “Salon,” a portrayal that drew much attention and acclaim. Hero is now recognized as a thespian ready to take challenging roles.
With his upcoming teleserye return in Love Will Lead You Back opposite Jericho Rosales and Sam Milby and this much awaited reprise appearance on MMK, Hero has attained fulfillment as a Kapamilya artist, returning now as a respected actor worthy of praise.
